Commercial activity grew 2.72% in July of 2025

During July of 2025, the Commerce sector registered an increase of 2.72% compared to the same month of the last year, driven by the dynamism of the wholesale trade, the retail trade and automotive trade, informed the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). According to the results of the Monthly Survey of Commerce, between January and July of 2025, this sector accumulated a growth of 3.12% compared to the same period of 2024.


Wholesale trade grew by 2.38%
During the month under analysis, the wholesale trade expanded by 2.38% compared to July of 2024, based in the higher sale of heavy-duty machinery, transportation, measurement and refrigeration equipment, driven by the demand of sectors such as mining, agriculture, fishing and construction, besides of the award of tenders.


Likewise, the sale of liquid and gas fuels and lubricants to the retail gas stations, as well as the retail of metals and metal ores, in response to the greater demand of zinc, gold and steel plates. In addition, the commercialization of computers, peripheral equipment and computer programs.


The sale of agriculture raw materials and of life animals progressed thanks to the greater commercialization of grains and seeds, oleaginous fruits and life chicken, in addition of the subproducts for animal feed. Likewise, the sale of foods and beverages increased due to the greater demand of dairy products, oils, legumes, meats, sugar, cacao, coffee and fishing products.


On the other hand, the sale of household goods contracted, as well as textile products, clothing items and footwear.


Retail trade increased by 2.46%
During July of 2025, the retail trade grew 2.46% compared to the same month of 2024, explained mainly by the greater sale of pharmaceutical and medical, products, cosmetics and toiletries, favored by promotions and special offers due to National Holidays, beside of new commercial strategies.


In addition, the growth of sales of technologic devices, topographic equipment and chemical products of agribusiness use, as well as computers, peripheral equipment, computer programs and telecommunication equipment, driven by the renovation of equipment and campaigns for National Holidays, Cyber Days and Cyber Wow.


To this added the increase the sale in supermarkets and minimarkets due to the greater demand of beverages and meats, new business lines and advertising campaigns; as well as the greater sale of drinks in liquor stores and related business due to the campaign of the Pisco Day.


Likewise, the sale in stores and market stalls of foods, beverages and textiles increased due to the seasonal factors and festivities. In addition, the sale in butchers, poultry, greengroceries and groceries strengthen due to the promotion campaigns and greater demand of fruits, legumes and meats. In parallel, the sale of fuels in gas stations and self-services grew, associated to the increase of the vehicle fleet.

On the other hand, the sale of clothing items, footwear and leather articles reduced in specialized stores.


Automotive trade expanded by 6.61%
During July of 2025, the automotive trade grew 6.61%, compared to the same month of the last year, due to the greater demand of light-duty, heavy-duty and minor vehicles, driven by the events such as the 2025 Automotive Festival and the Expo Moto 2025, as well as the opening of new sale points and better financing conditions.


The same trend was observed in the sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and its parts, pieces and accessories; as well as in the sale of parts and accessories of automotive vehicles, in special pneumatics and filters. In addition, the maintenance and repair of automotive vehicles grew due to the increase of contracts of GLP conversion.
