In Peru women spend more than three times of time to unpaid work than men

The results of the 2024 National Survey of Use of the Time (ENUT) , performed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), revealed that women spend more time to unpaid work compared with men. Therefore, during the day women spend 04:48 hours to domestic work, care provided to household members or support to other households, community service or volunteering, meanwhile men just spend 01:35 hours to domestic work.

During the presentation of results of the ENUT, the chief of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), Dr. Gaspar Morán Flores, stated that from Monday to Friday, women carry out unpaid work three times more than men, Saturdays 2.4 times and Sundays 1.8 times more.

The National Survey of Use of the Time was carried out after 14 years, in order to determine the differences between men and women regarding the distribution of the use of time in household chores or activities of daily life necessary for personal, family and social development. It was targeted to the usual resident population of 12 years old and older.

The ENUT was developed in coordination with the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP) and the results will serve to identify the gender inequalities in the use of time, that allow to design public policies that promote gender equality and the conciliation of the labor and family life. Likewise, the Satellite Account of the Unpaid Work in the National Accounts, with special emphasis in the unpaid domestic work.

Decreased average time spent to unpaid work in women
The results of the 2024 ENUT evidenced that the average time that women use during the week for unpaid work decreased compared to 2010; nevertheless, it is noted that the time spent by men for this type of activities increased during the weekends.

During the days of the week, the average time of women spent to domestic activities, caring for members of the household, caring members of the household, supporting other households, performing community labors or voluntary activities was of 05:07 hours and during the weekends 05:05 hours. In the case of men represented 02:09 hours during the week and 02:40 hours during the weekends.

Compared to 2010, the average time that women spent in unpaid activities during the week and weekend reduced in 00:39 and 0:56 minutes, respectively.

Type of unpaid work
In the case of women, the use of time for domestic activities represented 03:35 hours during the day of the week and in men 01:37 hours. On Saturdays, the times registered 03:50 and 01:57 hours, in women and in men, respectively; and in Sundays was of 03:47 hours in women and 02:27 in men.
Regarding the care of its members of the household, women spent 02:57 hours and men 01:38 hours during the days of the week; on Saturdays, these hours represented 02:49 and 01:59 in women and men, respectively; and on Sundays women use 02:55 hours and men use 02:21 hours.

For volunteer or support works to other households, in a day of a week, women spend 02:43 hours and men spend 02:31; on Saturdays these times represented 03:00 for women and 03:07 in men and in Sundays, women use three hours.

According to age, the ENUT revealed that women of 30 to 39 years old are those that spent more time to unpaid work (06:37 hours), followed, by those of 40 to 49 years of age with 05:44 hours.

Women spent more than two hours for the preparation of foods
According to unpaid daily activities, women spend 02:11 hours for the preparation and service of food; for the maintenance of the household 01:24 hours, cleaning and laundry and footwear care 01:22 hours and for household cleaning 01:04 hours. Meanwhile, they use 58 minutes for purchasing for household, 31 minutes for caring for pets and one hour for the administration of household.

In the case of men, it was observed that for maintenance and minor home repair use 01:26 horas; meanwhile that for preparation of foods just spend 58 minutes.

Average time dedicated to personal activities
According to 2024 ENUT, the population of 12 years old and older spend 06:58 hours for learning or study during the day of the week and 02:11 hours the weekends; for recreational activities use 01:55 hours in the week and 02:38 the weekends; and for personal care and physiological activities spend 11:56 hours in the week and 12:57 hours during the weekends.

According to sex, men spend 07:02 hours for learning and study and women spend 06:54 hours; meanwhile that for personal care, men and women spend 11:54 hours and 11:48 hours, respectively.


Women of 12 to 19 years of age spend eight hours daily for learning and study
By ages it is observed that women from 12 to 19 years of age spend 08:00 hours of the day to study and learning; men 07:45 hours. In the group of 20 to 29 years of age, women spend 06:34 hours and men 06:56 hours; and in those that are between 30 to 39 years of age the hours of study spend for women are of 02:58 hours and in men are of 03:19 hours.

Average time spends in the activities
The results of the 2024 ENUT showed that compared to the year 2010, it increased the minutes spend to works in the occupation and personal activities; meanwhile it decreased the time spend in unpaid work.

During the day of the week, women, women spend 06:29 hours to work in the occupation and in men 08:41 hours, result that represented an increase of 48 and 34 minutes in women and men, respectively. In the case of personal activities, women spend 15:26 hours and men 16:05 hours, being the time the greater in 38 minutes for women and greater in 40 minutes for men. Regarding the unpaid work, the time spend by women (05:07 hours) and in men (02:09 hours) it reduced in 38 and 6 minutes, respectively.
It is important to indicate that the weekends the time spent by women for personal activities was of 16:37 hours and by men was of 17:38 hours, which meant an increase of 74 minutes for women and 75 minutes for men, compared to the registered in 2010.

It is important to mention that in weekday or weekend, women spend 20% of her day in unpaid activities. Meanwhile, men spend (6.6 % during the day of the week and 10.0 during the weekends) in these tasks increases the weekends, but is the half of the time that women spend.

By age, it was observed that the time of work increases in men of 40 to 49 years of age, where it reaches 9:36 hours and in women of 7:05 hours; meanwhile in those from the age of 50 years old, the time of work decreases progressively in both sexes.
