Commercial activity grew 3.16 % in January of 2025

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the month of January of 2025, the commerce sector grew 3.16 % compared to the same month of the last year, due to the positive behavior of the wholesale trade, retail trade and automotive trade.

During the first month of the year, the wholesale trade increased by 2.93%, compared to January of 2024, driven by the sale of solid, liquid, gas fuels and lubricants, mainly due to the sale of fuels to different productive sectors and to retail stores and distributors of domestic gas.

Likewise, the sale of heavy-duty machines, air conditioning equipment and equipment of high- and low-voltage, for mining, construction and agricultural sectors; increased. In addition, the sale of nutritional and pharmaceutical products, equipment of computer security, natural energizers, fertilizers and electronic security systems, increased; as well as the sale of metals and metal ores favoured by the greater production of copper and local demand of steel.

Meanwhile, the sale of computers, peripheral equipment and computer programs increased due to the greater quantity of corporate contracts and campaigns. In addition, the sale of foods, beverages and tobacco, increased due to the variety of brands and of soda drinks, fruit nectars and water by summer season. Nevertheless, the demand of telecommunications electronic equipment and its part; construction materials and hardware cover reduced.

During January of the current year the retail trade increased by 3.63 %, compared to the same month of the last year, influenced by the greater sale in supermarkets and minimarkets, as a consequence of the high demand of soda drinks, table waters, ice-creams, confectionary and products associated to the basic basket. The same behavior showed the sale of pharmaceutical and medicinal products, cosmetics and toiletries, due to the presence of new lines of products and intense advertising campaigns, about skincare.

It is worth to mention that the greater sale of computers, peripheral equipment and computer programs positively evolved, before the renovation of personal computers and desk computers and printers due to the beginning of the academic year; as well as the acquisition of hardware equipment and software updating.

Likewise, the retail sale of household appliances, furniture and other articles for the household by summer season, increased. In this regard, the sale of fashion accessories increased (sunglasses), costume jewelry, watchmaking, products of personal security, portable extinguishers, surveying equipment, pet’s accessories, agricultural inputs, pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers.

The increase in the sale of clothing items, footwear and leather goods was due to the greater sale during the summer season, stock clearance and payment credit facilities. Finally, the sale in department stores, increased outstanding fashion articles, household appliances, school supplies, by campaign of start of school and season products such as bathing clothes, beach accessories and outdoor furniture. On the other hand, the sale of cookware line and domestic accessories in market stalls, as well as the sale of books, newspapers and stationary items.

During the month of January of 2025, the automotive commerce registered a positive behavior of 3.46 %, compared to the month of January of 2024, driven by the greater demand of light-duty vehicles, Heavy-duty vehicles and small vehicles, that was favoured by public tenders, business strategies and facilities of bank financing.

Likewise, the sale of spare parts, pieces and accessories of automotive vehicles, outstanding the sale of engine parts, filters and pneumatics. In addition, it continues the positive trend in the sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and its parts, pieces and accessories, through advertising and events such as The Fair of the Delivery Man – Lima Bikes.

Finally, the maintenance and repair of automotive vehicles registered a progress driven by the attraction of new contracts and clients.
