El sombrero de paja toquilla es una indumentaria con historia y tradición. Inicialmente se confeccionaba en junco y luego en paja blanca traída de las costas ecuatorianas y la selva peruana. A fines del siglo XIX, Catacaos se convirtió en el eje sombrerero del Perú. Los conocimientos y técnicas del tejido del sombrero fino fueron declarados Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación por Resolución Viceministerial N.º 033-2013-VMPCIC-MC, por constituir una tradición transmitida de generación en generación y por ser símbolo de identidad local.

Catacaos Straw Hat

The toquilla straw hat is a garment with history and tradition. It was initially made from reed and later from white straw brought from the Ecuadorian coasts and the Peruvian jungle. At the end of the 19th century, Catacaos became the hat-making hub of Peru. The knowledge and techniques of fine hat weaving were declared National Cultural Heritage by Vice Ministerial Resolution No. 033-2013-VMPCIC-MC, for constituting a tradition transmitted from generation to generation and for being a symbol of local identity.

Initialement, il était fabriqué en jonc, puis en paille blanche provenant des côtes équatoriennes et de la forêt péruvienne. À la fin du XIXe siècle, Catacaos est devenu le centre de la chapellerie du Pérou. Les connaissances et les techniques de tissage du chapeau fin ont été déclarées patrimoine culturel de la nation par la résolution vice-ministérielle N.º 033-2013-VMPCIC-MC, car elles constituent une tradition transmise de génération en génération et sont un symbole de l'identité locale.
