The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) actively participated in the second Regional Gathering of Women Leaders in Coffee and Cacao Production in Peru, held from December 1 to 3 in Tingo María, Huánuco region. This initiative is carried out by Solidaridad within the framework of the project “Strengthening the Leadership of Women Coffee and Cacao Producers as Defenders of the Rights and Empowerment of Women Producers of Coffee and Cacao in Peru,” funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The event brought together 33 women leaders producing coffee and cacao from 8 regions of the country, representing 24 organizations linked to the coffee and cacao value chains. Through this initiative, each participant is expected to share the knowledge acquired with at least 10 families in their communities, benefiting around 300 families through the Inclusive Technical Assistance (ATI) model and the use of digital tools such as the Cultivate knowledge platform.

During the first day, MIDAGRI presented the progress of the National Strategy for Alignment with the EUDR, which aims to ensure that products such as cacao, coffee, and palm oil destined for the European Union comply with requirements to be deforestation-free, respect national legislation, and include the due diligence declaration from the European importer. This strategy is based on three main pillars: information generation, clarification of the legal framework, and risk management for due diligence.

The technical team also explained to the women leaders the importance of the parcel geolocation process and demonstrated the use of MIDAGRI’s AgroDigital application, a tool that allows agricultural producers to access key information for managing their activities. Its features include crop and parcel geolocation, satellite monitoring, price consultation, notifications of agricultural and financial services, among others.

In parallel, the essential role of rural women in building a sustainable agricultural sector was highlighted, emphasizing the need to ensure conditions that promote their effective participation in the coffee and cacao value chains.

Additionally, the gathering included sessions led by Solidaridad and invited specialists, where two workshops were held to strengthen producers’ capacities: one on regulations and opportunities for public and private financing for coffee and cacao initiatives, and another dedicated to the development of women in the cacao chain, in which the Climate-Smart Cacao Manual was presented— a tool specially developed for women leaders to promote sustainable and climate-adapted practices.

Through these actions, MIDAGRI continues to promote competitive, sustainable agriculture aligned with the conservation of Amazonian forests, ensuring Peru’s preparedness for the upcoming requirements of the European EUDR regulation.
