The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) carried out a workshop in Cusco aimed at strengthening the capacities of the agricultural sector in response to the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) in the district of Kimbiri, province of La Convención.

The activity featured the participation of technical teams from MIDAGRI offices and the Regional Governments of Ayacucho and Cusco based in the VRAEM, who improved their skills and qualifications to provide technical support to agro-export cooperatives in their process of adapting to the European regulation.

More than 190 professionals and sector leaders took part in this event, which addressed the challenges and opportunities of the new European framework, set to take effect in 2026, requiring products such as coffee and cacao exported to the European Union to be deforestation-free and compliant with sustainability standards.

During the session, MIDAGRI presented progress on the National Strategy for Implementation of the EUDR, based on three pillars: information generation, clarification of the legal framework, and risk management for due diligence.

Likewise, the technical team provided direct support to producers in the use of the AgroDigital application, enabling them to geolocate plots and issue pilot-format compliance reports—essential tools for future export processes to the European market.

SERFOR presented the Use Concessions for Agroforestry Systems (CUSAF) mechanism, aimed at formalizing sustainable productive activities, while the Directorate-General of Agrarian Environmental Affairs (DGAAA) explained the guidelines of the Environmental Management Regulation for the Agrarian and Irrigation Sector (RGASAR).

Participants learned about the main requirements of the EUDR and its impact on the coffee and cacao value chains. The event highlighted the technical support provided to agro-export cooperatives, which play a key role in the commercial integration of small producers.

The Apurímac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers Valley (VRAEM)—connecting the regions of Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica, and Junín—represents enormous potential for coffee and cacao production and export, where these crops serve as an economic and social engine.

In the VRAEM region, 21,007 geolocated plots have been registered as part of the National Geolocation Plan implemented by MIDAGRI. In La Convención, the districts with the greatest progress are Pichari, with 1,526 geolocated plots, and Kimbiri, with 940.

Through these actions, MIDAGRI continues to promote a competitive, sustainable agriculture sector aligned with the conservation of Amazonian forests, ensuring Peru’s readiness for the upcoming requirements of the European EUDR regulation.
