In view of the upcoming enforcement of the European Union Regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR), the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), led by Minister Angel Manero Campos, inaugurated the international forum “Strengthening deforestation-free product value chains within the framework of the EUDR and cross-border cooperation”, held in Tarapoto.

The event brought together representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, international organizations, exporting companies, and producer organizations, with the aim of creating a dialogue space on the challenges and opportunities posed by the new European regulation, particularly for the coffee and cacao sectors.

During his remarks, Minister Manero Campos emphasized the opportunity represented by the European regulation: "Some years ago, when the news about the European anti-deforestation regulation came out, it certainly caused concern and uncertainty. We didn’t know exactly what we had to comply with, what the procedure would be. Fortunately, in that process, we had the support of the European Union itself to adapt. And in a short time, we understood perfectly that far from being a challenge, it was a great opportunity for the country, because it allowed us to develop sustainable productive activities

The minister also highlighted the importance of protecting forests while promoting agricultural development: "With current coffee prices at more than $400 per quintal, and cocoa at more than $7,000 per ton, there is greater pressure to deforest for agriculture—we are aware of this, and it is something we must not allow. We are clear that we need to strengthen value chains, strengthen productivity, formalize and consolidate these producers, so that there is no need to clear more forest."

At the forum, MIDAGRI officially launched AgroDigital, a mobile application that provides farmers with access to agricultural services, technical assistance, and digital solutions to optimize crop management. Its main features include plot geolocation, satellite monitoring, price consultations, technical alerts, and access to inputs and certifications.

"This AgroDigital tool fits perfectly—it enables us to georeference, but beyond traceability, it is something very important that directly connects the Ministry with the country’s producers. In coffee and cacao alone, we have more than 400,000 farmers. That represents nearly 25% of all national producers. This shows how crucial the issue of anti-deforestation is, and how AgroDigital goes hand in hand with public policy that the Ministry must implement,"; he stated.

The event was supported by the SAFE Project (Sustainable Agriculture forForest Ecosystems), the Delegation of the European Union in Peru, CAF, IDB,and the World Bank.Through these actions, MIDAGRI reaffirms its commitment to modernizingPeruvian agriculture, ensuring the sustainability of its value chains, and openingnew trade opportunities in global markets.
