The event, which took place on September 10 and 11, brought together around 100 local producers. It was organized by the El Quinacho Agrarian Cooperative and the VRAEM Cacao Producers Association, with support from Agromercado.

Throughout the sessions, key topics for strengthening the sector were addressed, including the Law on the Improvement of Agrarian Producers' Associations, progress made by MIDAGRI in the implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), and the application of due diligence criteria in human rights and environmental matters.

New fair trade criteria related to EUDR compliance were also discussed, highlighting the importance for cooperatives and associations in the VRAEM to enhance their competitiveness in international markets through sustainable and responsible practices.

On the final day, an action plan was proposed to train VRAEM cooperatives and associations on EUDR compliance. Additionally, it was suggested that MIDAGRI prioritize support for local coffee and cacao producers. This reaffirmed the commitment to move toward responsible production with greater international reach.

MIDAGRI emphasized that preparing regional teams is essential to ensure the sustainability and competitiveness of the agricultural sector, particularly in strategic value chains such as coffee and cacao.
We preserve, cultivate, and export

The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a regulation aimed at preventing products linked to deforestation—such as cattle, soy, coffee, cacao, palm oil, rubber, and timber—from being sold in the European Union.

To this end, the regulation requires that these products not come from land deforested after December 31, 2020, that they comply with the laws of the producing country, and that the importer submits a due diligence statement. Thus, products like coffee, cacao, and palm oil can only be marketed in the EU if they meet three conditions: (i) be free from deforestation, (ii) have been produced in accordance with the legislation of the country of origin, and (iii) be supported by a due diligence statement from the importer. The EUDR will come into effect on December 30, 2025, representing both a challenge and an opportunity for Peru to continue positioning itself as a country committed to sustainable agriculture.
