The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) actively participated in two key events held in the Piura region on June 26 and 27, aimed at strengthening the cocoa value chain with a territorial, sustainable, and inclusive approach. These events included the Regional Technical Roundtable on Cocoa and the 2nd Regional Meeting of Women Cocoa Producers, under the theme “For a sustainable cocoa chain with a woman's face.”
During the event, MIDAGRI presented the National Strategy for Compliance with the EUDR Regulation, which aims to ensure that products such as cocoa, coffee, and palm oil can be exported to the European Union if they meet the conditions of being deforestation-free, produced in accordance with national legislation, and have a due diligence declaration from the importer.
The strategy, promoted in coordination with regional governments, associations, cooperatives, and international partners, incorporates a social inclusion approach, recognizing the leading role of rural women in the country's sustainable agricultural development. Within this framework, the need to create equitable conditions and concrete mechanisms for their effective participation in the cocoa chain was highlighted.
As part of the technical agenda, the workshop "Challenges of the Cocoa Value Chain: Agenda for the Piura Regional Cocoa Plan" was held, bringing together regional authorities, universities, research centers such as INIA and Bioversity, agricultural agencies, producer organizations, and representatives of international cooperation agencies.
During the workshop, key issues were identified, and proposals were agreed upon to strengthen women's participation in the value chain. These include: promoting female and community leadership, institutionalizing gender equity, promoting programs for women and youth, fostering sustainable production practices, and strengthening strategic alliances and public policies with a gender perspective.
These activities are part of the territorial outreach and coordination process led by MIDAGRI for the progressive implementation of the EUDR Regulation, with an inclusive and participatory approach aligned with the country's international commitments to promote sustainable, competitive, and deforestation-free agriculture.
