The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation led a new meeting of the Climate Change Commission of the Sustainable Agricultural Development Cooperation Group (GC-DAS), focusing on the agricultural sector's progress in complying with the European Union Regulation on Deforestation (EUDR).
The Climate Change Commission is one of the three thematic commissions of the GC-DAS, which aims to promote opportunities for coordination and synergy between state entities, international cooperation agencies, and the private sector to address the challenges of climate change in agriculture. This was the second session dedicated to the EUDR adaptation process, following a first meeting held in June 2024.
During the meeting, the main advances related to the geolocation of plots, the integration of monitoring tools, the clarification of the legal framework, and the development of guidelines related to due diligence were presented to ensure the sustainability of the coffee, cocoa, and palm oil chains—priority crops for compliance with the new European regulation.
The MIDAGRI reported that it is currently promoting the geolocation of productive plots in 13 regions of the country, as well as the implementation of a public repository of geospatial information. Agreements have also been established with monitoring technology platforms as part of the EUDR compliance verification process.
Regarding the legal component, progress has been made in analyzing national regulations applicable to production chains and in developing technical guidelines for exporters. These actions are complemented by export pilots and the provision of technical assistance in producing regions.
Furthermore, the Midagri highlighted the importance of building a producer-centered strategy, based on solid evidence and effective coordination across territories. This strategy must integrate aspects such as increasing productivity, farmer specialization, and the provision of financial and non-financial incentives, thus ensuring the sustainability of the progress made under the EUDR.
Likewise, the initiative is committed to an orderly transition, with technical and legal support, that will allow rural families to adapt and take advantage of the opportunities offered by sustainable trade.
These actions are part of a multisectoral strategy led by the MIDAGRI, with the participation of state entities and international cooperation agencies to continue generating synergies so that this international regulation does not affect our agricultural producers and strengthens sustainable, competitive, and deforestation-free agriculture.
