As part of compliance with the European Union Regulation on Deforestation (EUDR), the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) concluded its participation in the international event "EUDR in Action – Eurotrip to Strengthen LATAM-EU Partnerships on Deforestation-Free Value Chain," held in Belgium.
Throughout the week, the Peruvian delegation participated in a series of high-level meetings with European authorities, private sector representatives, and specialized agencies, successfully harmonizing criteria and approaches between producer and European countries.
The event also contributed to understanding the progress and challenges facing Latin American countries in implementing the EUDR, as well as improving actions to address the implications of this regulation for each player in the marketing chain.
As a result of these meetings, it was proposed to foster regional spaces for dialogue and joint learning, especially among countries whose supply chains are interconnected.
The goal was to promote the exchange of experiences between South and Central America, involving public and private stakeholders, with the goal of strengthening capacities and sharing best practices regarding the European regulation.
Technical and institutional agenda
During the mission, technical sessions were held with the European Commission, the Belgian competent authority (SPF Santé publique), and key meetings with the customs authority of the Port of Antwerp, a central infrastructure for the verification of products subject to the EUDR regulation. At the port, inspection areas, warehouses, and entry control points were visited.
Among the activities carried out, the multi-stakeholder dialogue "Building Bridges between Continents" stood out. This brought together governments, Latin American exporting companies, European private sector organizations, and civil society. They analyzed common challenges, shared experiences, and reflected on practical approaches to implementing the EUDR.
The agenda also included meetings with the German competent authority (BLE), responsible for the implementation of the EUDR in that country, and a session with certification providers, aimed at strengthening mutual understanding of existing schemes and their role in compliance with the regulation.
It is worth noting that the Peruvian Export and Tourism Promotion Commission (PROMPERÚ), attached to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR), also actively participated in this mission. PROMPERÚ's presence reflects the coordinated work across sectors to comprehensively represent the country.
This event was organized by the Team Europe Initiative (TEI) on Deforestation-Free Value Chains, with the support of the Sustainable Agriculture for Forest Ecosystems (SAFE) project, which is co-financed by the European Union (EU), the Dutch Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs (BZ) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and implemented by the German development cooperation agency GIZ.
