The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) began its participation in the first day of the international event “EUDR in Action – Eurotrip to Strengthen LATAM-EU Partnerships on Deforestation-Free Value Chain”, which brings together political and technical representatives from Latin American countries such as Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala and Ecuador, as well as key actors from the public and private sectors in Europe.
MIDAGRI is represented by the Vice Minister of Agricultural Development Policies and Supervision, Carmen Vegas Guerrero, and the Director of Economic Studies, Carlos Ynga.
This important meeting aims to strengthen understanding and cooperation around the European Union Regulation on Deforestation (EUDR), which is scheduled to come into force in December 2025.
During the first day, technical and high-level meetings were held with authorities from the European Commission and the Belgian government. Among the topics discussed were the current status of the EUDR, the support measures available to partner countries, and progress in the implementation of the regulation in Latin America.
The Peruvian delegation also met with representatives of the Belgian Federal Public Service for Health, Food Chain Safety, and Environment; the competent authority responsible for ensuring compliance with the EUDR
Key aspects were discussed in the technical sessions, such as regulatory and policy approaches for effective implementation of the regulation, practical strategies for field application, and inspection and monitoring procedures aimed at ensuring operator compliance.
By participating in this event, MIDAGRI reaffirms Peru's commitment to sustainable, competitive agriculture aligned with international requirements.
The event is organized by the Team Europe Initiative (TEI) on Deforestation-Free Value Chains, within the framework of the Sustainable Agriculture for Forest Ecosystems (SAFE) program. It will take place from May 25 to 30, 2025, and includes technical meetings with the European Commission, the competent authorities of Belgium and Germany, the Customs Authority of the Port of Antwerp, as well as exchanges with representatives of the private sector and civil society.
This initiative aims to share practical knowledge on the implementation of the EUDR and facilitate the exchange of experiences between Latin American countries and their European partners.
