The Leaders Summit on Climate aims to be an urgent and open dialogue that promotes the strengthening of collective efforts to face the global climate crisis. It is expected that the commitments that the countries make at this meeting will contribute to maintaining the goal of limiting the increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius for the coming years, in addition to proposing more ambitious climate goals for 2030, in the framework of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 26), to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, next November.

During his speech in the segment dedicated to nature-based solutions, Minister Quijandría stated that in recent years Peru has strengthened its climate institutions and its national strategy to, among other objectives, achieve carbon neutrality and the country's resilience by this century’s midpoint. This is in response to the fact that Peru is one of the 17 most megadiverse countries in the world, as well as one of the 10 States with the largest area of forests, of which 94% are located in the Amazon region.

He added that for our country the sustainable use of forests is fundamental in a comprehensive vision, due to their contribution as carbon fixers, regulators of the water cycle, and generators of conditions for biodiversity and other ecosystem resources. Finally, he highlighted the importance of international initiatives that contribute to generating conditions in terms of technology, technical assistance, and financing to support States in fulfilling the commitments adopted within the framework of the Paris Agreement.
