Paddy rice production grew 7.0% at national level and three departments concentrated 71.7% during May of 2024

In May of 2024, the paddy rice production reached 524 thousand 56 tons, a higher volume in 7.0% compared to the same month of 2023, mainly contributing in this result the departments of La Libertad (40.0%), Lambayeque (11.1%) and San Martín (4.4%) which concentrated the 71.7% of the national total. This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the technical report Peru: Departmental Economic Outlook.
Likewise, it stated that the production of this cereal also increased in Piura (112.5%), Huánuco (94.2%), Ancash (44.1%), Loreto (8.8%) and Ucayali (2.1%), among the most representative. Meanwhile, it decreased in Cusco (-75.5%), Junín (-56.1%), Pasco (-51.9%), Puno (-45.5%), Madre de Dios (-45.2%), Arequipa (-30.2%), Amazonas (-26.9%) and Cajamarca (-13.6%).
This favorable behavior, registered at national level, was supported in the suitable weather conditions that allowed greater harvested areas and greater performances of this crop.
In 13 departments potato production presented a positive behavior
Potato production in May of 2024 increased in the departments of Apurímac (49.6%), Puno (46.3%), Junín (11.7%) and Ayacucho (4.9%), which together contributed with the 62.0% of the national total. Likewise, it grew in Huancavelica (44.8%), Moquegua (38.2%), La Libertad (33.3%), Pasco (26.8%), Piura (19.8%), Cajamarca (14.4%), Ancash (12.4%), Huánuco (8.0%) and Ica (4.5%). Nevertheless, it contracted in Tacna (-87.4%), Cusco (-28.7%), Lima (-7.2%), Amazonas (-4.3%) and Arequipa (-1.8%).
At national level, potato production totalized 1 million 451 thousand 716 tons and grew in 17.8% compared to the same month of 2023, determined by the increase of the harvested area that was influenced by the availability of the water resource due to the rains registered in the central highlands.
Lima, Ica and La Libertad contributed with 78.3% of the national poultry production
In May of 2024, poultry production increased in 1.6% compared to the same month of 2023, reflected in the greater production of chicken and laying hen. This growth happened mainly in the producer centers placed in Lima (2.8%), Ica (1.5%) and La Libertad (1.2%), that together represented 78.3% of the total produced. Also, it increased in Lambayeque (0.7%), San Martín (0.2%) and Piura (0.1%).
This progress was attenuated by the lower poultry production in the departments of Pasco (-5.3%), Apurímac (-5.1%), Huánuco (-4.7%), Amazonas (-4.5%), Tumbes (-3.9%), Huancavelica (-3.6%) and Ancash (-3.6%), among others.
Negative behavior showed the copper production
In May of 2024, copper production contracted in 1.1% compared to the same month of the last year, explained by the low extractions performed in the Mining companies Antapaccay, Minera Las Bambas, Marcobre, Cerro Verde, El Brocal, Minera Shouxin Perú, Anglo American Quellaveco and Gold Fields La Cima. Nevertheless, it increased the levels extracted in the mining companies Antamina, Southern Perú Copper Corporation and Hudbay Perú.
According to departments, the copper production reduced in Cajamarca (-37.2%), Pasco (-35.5%), Ayacucho (-28.0%), Cusco (-22.7%), Apurímac (-22.6%), Puno (-20.6%), Ica (-19.6%) and Arequipa (-4.7%). In the other hand, it increased in Ancash (33.7%), Tacna (14.7%), Junín (4.9%) and Moquegua (0.6%), that concentrated together 56.2% of the national total.
Electricity production increased in 1.9%
The INEI informed that the production of electric energy increased in 1.9% during May of 2024, driven by the greater generation of hydraulic origin energy in the power stations El Platanal, Marañón, Charcani V, Machupicchu, Mantaro and Cañón del Pato, among the main ones. At the same time, it increased the generation of non-conventional renewable energy (Eolic and solar).
Meanwhile, it reduced the production of thermic energy due to the lower generation of the power stations Independencia, Santa Rosa, Malacas II, Kallpa, Oquendo, Olleros and Aguaytía.
Among the departments that outstood with its greater production were Ica (56.4%), Ancash (45.0%) and Huancavelica (24.2%), that together concentrated 28.3% of the total of electric energy generated.
Meanwhile, the production of electric energy decreased in Lima (-8.2%), but in spite of that, contributed with 45.2% of the national total. Likewise, the production of electric energy also decreased in Ucayali (-89.4%), Madre de Dios (-62.7%), Cajamarca (-13.1%), Ayacucho (-12.6%) and Huánuco (-9.6%), among others.
Revenue Collected by Internal Tax totalized 10 thousand 207 million 385 thousand Soles
The revenues collected by internal taxes reported 10 thousand 207 million 385 thousand Soles and increased in 1.8% compared to May of 2023, based in the greater payments of income tax (first, fourth, fifth category, non-domiciled and regularization, among others); in addition to the value added tax and selective excise tax.
Among the departments that registered the greater amounts collected, outstood Ica (58.9%), La Libertad (26.2%) and Lima (2.2%), which contributed with the 90.2% of the national total. Nevertheless, the amounts decreased in Piura (-49.1%), Ancash (-21.3%), Huancavelica (-9.4%), Moquegua (-7.8%), Cusco (-7.7%), Arequipa (-3.6%) and Pasco (-1.3%), among others.
