Traffic flow of vehicles at national level increased in 6.5% In May of 2024

The National Instituto of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), informed that during the month of May of 2024, the National Index of Traffic Flow that reports the traffic flow of light and heavy-duty vehicles through the tollbooths of the country grew 6.5% compared to the same month of 2023 and in the last months (June 2023 – May 2024) increased in 3.2%.
In the technical report Vehicular Flow through Tollbooths Units stated that the result obtained in the fifth month of the year was driven by the greater traffic flow of heavy-duty (8.6%) and light-duty (4.7%) vehicles.
Traffic Flow of heavy-duty vehicles grew in 8.6%
During the month of May of 2024, the traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles reported through the tollbooths increased in 8.6%, compared to the same month of 2023. The favorable behavior of this indicator is explained by the progress of the Agricultural, Maritime Fishing, Manufacturing and Wholesale Commerce, that increased the demand of this service for the distribution of its products.
The monthly result was also influenced by the dynamism of the Construction sector due to the greater execution of public Works in the three government levels; as well as the Mining sector that registered greater extraction of molybdenum, silver, iron, gold, lead and tin.
The tollbooths with high traffic flow were: To the north, San Martín (Aguas Claras 9.5%), La Libertad (Chicama 7.7% and Virú 4.1%), Áncash (Huarmey 7.3%), Lambayeque (Diversion Olmos 6.0%), Cajamarca (Pomahuaca-Pucará 4.5%) and Piura (Chulucanas 4.2% and Piura Sullana 0.2%).
In the center, Lima (Serpentine of Pasamayo 11.8%, El Paraíso 10.5%, Fortaleza 7.9% and Variant of Pasamayo 5.0%) and Junín (Quiulla 0.2%).
Likewise, in the south, Moquegua (Pampa Cuéllar 15.2% and Ilo 7.8%), Ayacucho (Pampa Galera 14.1%), Ica (Marcona 11.9% and Jahuay Chincha 6.4%), Apurímac (Pichirhua 8.0%) and Arequipa (Matarani Concesión 5.2%).
Traffic flow of heavy goods vehicles of 3 to 7 axle increased in 4.3%
In May of 2024, the traffic flow of heavy goods units of 3 to 7 axle increased in 4.3% compared to the same month of 2023, due to the greater traffic of vehicles such as trailers, and drayage trucks of 3 axle (2.9%), 4 axle (4.9%), 6 axle (5.7%) and 7 axle (28.6%); meanwhile, it decreased in those of 5 axle (-0.9%).
Traffic flow of light-duty vehicles increased in 4.7%
During the month under analysis, the traffic of light-duty vehicles reported through the tollbooths of the country increased in 4.7% compared to the same month of 2023. This behavior was influenced by the greater movement of people on the occasion of the Mother’s Day, Labor Day and religious festivities performed in different regions that driven the domestic tourism, retail trade and demand of accommodation and restaurants service by domestic and foreign visitors in the different touristic destinations of the country.
