Consumer prices of Lima Metropolitan area increased by 0.12% in the month of June of 2024

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that in the month of June of 2024, the Consumer Price Index of Lima Metropolitan area increased 0.12%, with an accumulated variation to the sixth month of 2024 of 1.57%; and in the last twelve months (July 2023 – June 2024) reached to 2.29%.
In the technical report Variation of the Price Indicators of the Economy is stated that the monthly result was influenced, mainly, by the increase observed in the consumption divisions Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (0.11%), Restaurants and Hotels (0.20%), Goods and Different Services (0.27%) and Transportation (0.18%).
In addition, it registered increase of prices the divisions of Furniture, Articles for Household and Routine Household Maintenance (0,11%), Recreation and Culture (0.11%), Education (0.06%), Accommodation, Water, Electricity, gas and Other Fuels (0.03%), Clothing Items and Footwear (0.08%), Health (0.05%) and Communications (0.01%). Nevertheless, the division Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics did not registered variation.
The increase of prices in the division Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages was due to the greater prices of fishes and seafood (6.6%) such as, Bonito (16.6%), horse mackerel (14.4%), Perico fish (8,1%), Lisa fish (8.0%) and mackerel (3.0%). In vegetables and legumes including potato and other tubers (2.5%) such as corn (49.3%), yellow sweet potato (12.5%), cauliflower (11.6%), tomato (8.7%), yellow potato (7.8%), pickle (5.8%), carrot (5.3%), whole black olives (6.3%), Huayro potato (3.4%), white potato (1.9%) and color potato (1.8%).
Likewise, it experienced the increases other food products (1.6%) such as ground garlic (13.1%), monosodium glutamate (2.3%) and hydrated dressings (1.6%); mineral water, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juices (0.6%) such as tales carbonated beverages (0.9%) and non-carbonated water (0.4%); also, coffee, tea and cacao (0.5%) such as products that have chocolate in them (2.5%) and cocoa in powder (2.4%).
On the other hand, it decreased the prices of meat (-1.7%) such as eviscerated chicken (-3.9%), eviscerated hen (-3.3%), chicken cuts: wings (-2.9%), leg (-1.9%), chicken innards (-2.5%) and breaded chicken (-2.0%); and fruits (-1.7%) such as strawberry (-8.1%), passion fruit (-7.5%), cucumber (-5.8%), papaya (-5.5%), strong avocado (-4.4%), mandarina (-4.4%), tables oranges (-3.9%), Huayco peach (-3.7%), pineapple (-3.4%) and lemon (-2.5%).
In the division Transportation, increased the prices of passenger’s transport by air (3.4%) such as, domestique (11.9%) and international (0.9%) air ticket and vehicular natural gas (0.9%) and inter-provincial omnibus ticket (0.4%). Meanwhile, it decreased the prices of fuels for vehicles (-2.4%) such as Diesel petroleum (-2.6%), gasohol (-2.6%) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas LPG (-1.7%).
In Restaurants and Hotels increased the prices beverage service in restaurants and similar facilities (0.3%) included served beer (0.4%), hot beverages (0.3%) and served carbonated beverages (0.2%). Likewise, it registered increases of prices in the service of food in restaurants and similar facilities (0.2%) such as salchipapa (French Fries with Hot Dogs) (0.9%), pork cracklings (0.5%), Chifa plates (0.5%), sandwiches (0.4%), breaded chicken (0.4%), hen broth (0.4%), Chaufa rice (0.3%), menu in restaurants (0.2%), breakfast in restaurants (0.2%) and grilled chicken (0.1%).
In the division Goods and Different registered increases of prices in hairdressing salons and establishments of personal care (0.2%) such as hair waving (0.6%), hair dyes (0.5%) and aesthetic care of hands and feet (0.2%). Likewise, it was reported increases of prices in others devices, articles and products for personal attention (0.2%) such as toilet soap (0.6%), face creams (0.6%), cosmetics (0.5%), toiletries for babies (0.5%), conditioners (0.4%), woman’s (0.4%) and men’s (0.4%) and shampoo (0.2%).
Main products that registered rising prices
In the month of June of 2024, from the 586 products that make up a family basket, 265 increased their prices, 141 decreased and 180 kept their prices. The products with greater increase were corn (49.32%), Bonito fish (16.58%), horse mackerel (14.38%), grounded garlic (13.13%), domestic air ticket (11.87%), cauliflower (11.62%), apple (10.08%) and yellow potato (7.84%). Meanwhile, decrease of prices were registered in the following products: celery (14.87%), green peas (-11.24%), hake (-9.48%), leek (-8.10%), strawberry (-8.07%), passion fruit (-7.46%), cucumber (-5.82%) and papaya (-5.47%).
Products with greater incidence in the monthly variation
The variation of the month of June of 2024 was influenced mainly by the increase of prices of some foods such as corn, Bonito fish, yellow potato and horse mackerel; as well as the domestic air ticket, that together contributed with 0.151 percentage points to the monthly result; mitigated by the decrease in the prices in eviscerated chicken, green peas, strawberry, mandarin and gasohol.
Consumer prices without foods and energy increased in 0.16%
In the month of June of 2024, the variation of the Consumer Price Index in Lima Metropolitan area, without considering foods and energy (underlying inflation) grew 0.16%.
Consumer prices at national level slightly increased in 0.07%
During the month under analysis, the Consumer Price Index at National Level reached a variation of 0.07%, and in the accumulated of the first six months reached 1.30% and in the last twelve months (July 2023-June 2024) totalized 1.89%.
This behavior was explained by the increase of prices of the consumption divisions Goods and Different Services (0.26%), Restaurants and Hotels (0.18%), Health (0.13%), Recreation and Culture (0.09%), Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (0.09%), Transportation (0.07%), Education (0.06%), Clothing Items and Footwear (0.06%) and Furniture, Articles for the Household (0.05%).
On the other hand, decrease in the prices showed the divisions of Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.03%) and Accommodation, Water, Electricity, Gas (-0.02%). Meanwhile, Communications in average did not presented variation.
Variation of prices by cities
In June of 2024, 26 cities where it calculates the Consumer Price Index, the highest variations were observed in the cities of Cusco (0.36%), Huancayo and Moquegua (0.18% each one), Tarapoto (0.17%), Puno (0.16%) and Moyobamba (0.15%). Meanwhile, fifteen cities reported decrease in the prices, outstanding Pucallpa (-0.48%), Abancay (-0.44%), Iquitos (-0.31%) and Piura (-0.30%).
Wholesale prices at national level reduced in 0.01%
In the month of June of 2024, the Wholesale Price Index decreased by 0.01% due to the reduction of prices in the goods of national origin of the Manufacturing sector (gasohol, Diesel oil, industrial oil, construction rods, roof bricks, chicken meat, canned fish fillets, refined soybean oil, noodles, long pasta; industrial wheat flour and evaporated milk); livestock (live chicken, livestock: swine and ovine); fishing (hake, Cojinova fish, cabrilla fish, Perico fish and Cachema fish).
Meanwhile, it increased the prices of agricultural goods (green fava beans, sweet potato, corn, potato, tomato, carrot, avocado and lemon).
On the other side, it increased the prices of goods of imported origin, manufactured (forklift, trucks, vehicles for transportation, carbon black, front-end loaders, cyanide, steel sheets, power generators, polypropylene resins and lubricating oils); likewise, it grew the prices of agricultural goods (hard yellow corn and not carded cotton).
Machinery and equipment prices of increased by 1.01%
In the month under analysis, the Price Index of Machinery and Equipment increased 1.01%, explained by the greater prices of imported machinery and equipment such as, machinery and equipment for industry (storage lifts, bulldozers, printers and front dozers); machinery and transportation equipment (automotive vehicles for personnel transportation, road tractor for semi-trailer and air filters); other machinery and equipment (medical equipment); and machinery and equipment for the agriculture (agricultural tractors and picks).
In addition, it increased the prices of machinery and equipment of national origin, for transport (moto-taxi, car bodies and springs for automotive vehicles); industry (transformers and electric boards); other machinery and equipment (nets for a catch). Nevertheless, it decreased the prices of machinery and equipment for agriculture.
Prices of construction materials slightly increased in 0.03%
In June of 2024, the Price Index of Construction Materials in Lima Metropolitan area registered a slight increase of 0.03%, due to the increase reported in five groups of the ten that are part of this indicator glasses (tempered and primary glass); power supplies (power cable and flexible cables of general use); concrete structures (ready-mix concrete); tubes and plastic accessories (sewage pipes and PVC accessories for electricity); and binders’ group.
Meanwhile, it decreased the prices of the group of ceramic tiles and mosaics (coverings: floor and wall); metallics (zinc corrugated plates, LAC steel sheets, black wire, and construction rod); wire rod; binders (stone, sand and concrete); bricks (for roof and Pandereta Brick); and woods (plywood and oak).
