INEI will carry out pilot test of the application of the module of food insecurity in the ENAHO

With the purpose to train the personnel of the National Household Survey (ENAHO) for the application of questions that are part of the Food Insecurity Experience Scale – FIES module; as well as, to transmit the technical aspects and procedures for the development of questions, which allow quality information to be gathered, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), carried out a training workshop targeted to surveyors, local supervisors and departmental coordinators of the mentioned survey.
During the week of June 24th to 28th of the current year and as part of the workshop, field practices were carried out applying the FIES module in the ENAHO questionnaire. Theoretical training was in charge of Mrs. María Rodriguez from Spain, FAO Specialist in Agriculture and Food Security Statistics.
In line with the above-mentioned, between the month of October and November of 2023, the INEI and the FAO coordinate for the technical assistance that would allow to implement the adaptation of the mentioned module to the Peruvian case. Likewise, there were trained the methodologists and analysts of the household surveys that the INEI performs, such as, the National Household Survey (ENAHO), Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES) and the Agriculture National Survey (ENA).
Food Insecurity
According to FAO a person that suffers from food insecurity when lacks of regular access to sufficient safe and nutritious food for normal growth and development, and for an active and healthy life. This may be because the lack of availability of foods or to the lack of resources to obtain them.
The Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) module, collects the households and persons statements through eight perception questions, that are focused in the experiences and behaviors related to food that describes the respondents, related with increasing difficulties to access to food due to resource constrains.
Pilot Test will be carried out in July of 2024
During the month of July of the current year, the Pilot Test of the Food Insecurity Module will be carried out, at national level, which it has been included in the ENAHO questionnaire. FAO representatives will also physically participate in order to supervise field work.
Then, this mentioned activity is part of the feasibility assessment in order to obtain indicators of Food Insecurity proposed by the FAO, based in the FIES methodology; which results will complement the existing indicators in the country related with the food insecurity, corresponds to the calorie deficit, extreme monetary poverty, chronic malnutrition, anemia, overweight and obesity.
