Employed population of Lima Metropolitan area increased 4.7% in the mobile quarter March-April-May of 2024

During the mobile quarter March-April-May of the year 2024, the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area totalized 5 million 402 thousand 700 persons and compared with the same quarter of the year 2023, increased in 4.7% (241 thousand persons) and, compared to the same quarter of the year 2019 (pre-pandemic) in 11.0% (535 thousand 200 persons).
The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), in the technical report Situation of the Labor Market in Lima Metropolitan area, prepared with the results of the of the Permanent Survey of the National Employment (EPEN), stated that from the total of employed population of Lima Metropolitan area, 53.5% (2 million 892 thousand 900) are men and 46.5% (2 million 509 thousand 800) are women.
Female employed population increased in 6.3%
During the quarter under analysis, the female employed population increased in 6.3% (147 thousand 700), meanwhile, the male employed population increased in 3.3% (93 thousand 300).
The employed population of 45 years old and over increased in 9.2%
According to age groups, the employed population of 45 years old and over increased in 9.2% (172 thousand), followed by the population of 25 to 44 years old in 3.5% (90 thousand 300). On the other hand, in the population under 25 years old decreased in 2.9% (-21 thousand 400).
The employed population with the university superior education level increased in 11.6%
By comparing the mobile quarter under analysis with the same mobile quarter of 2023, the employed population with university superior education level increased in 11.6% (169 thousand 500), followed by the those that studied non-university superior education level in 5.9% (63 thousand 500) and those that have secondary education level in 0.8% (17 thousand 100). Meanwhile, the employed population with primary or lower education level decreased in 2.2% (-9 thousand 200).
Commerce sector led in employment generation
According to activity branches, the employed population increased in Commerce in 8.07% (92 thousand 100), followed by Services with 4.1% (122 thousand 100) and Manufacturing in 3.4% (22 thousand 900). Meanwhile, the Construction sector did not show a significative variation (0.1%).
Unemployment rate of Lima Metropolitan area was of 7.2%
During the mobile quarter under analysis, the unemployment rate in Lima Metropolitan area placed in 7.2%, compared to the same mobile quarter of the last year increased in 0.4 percentage point. It is estimated in 420 thousand 100 persons that seek actively employment in Lima Metropolitan area.
The employed population with suitable employment in Lima Metropolitan area increased in 7.2%
By comparing the mobile quarter March-April-May of 2024 with the same mobile quarter of the year 2023, the population with suitable employment of Lima Metropolitan area, increased in 7.2% (210 thousand 900 persons) and, compared to the same mobile quarter of the year 2019 in 1.2% (37 thousand 900). In Lima Metropolitan area the population with suitable employment totalized 3 million 158 thousand 200 persons.
Meanwhile, the underemployed population in during the quarter under analysis increased in 1.4% (30 thousand) and compared with the same mobile quarter of the year 2019 in 28.5% (497 thousand 300).
The average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area increased in 5.4%
The average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area placed in 2006, 8 Soles, compared with the same mobile quarter of the year 2023, grew in 5.4% (101,9 Soles) and compared to the same quarter of the year 2019 in 16.4% (283,1 Soles).
The average monthly income increased in all age groups
By comparing the mobile quarter under analysis with the same quarter of the last year, the average monthly income grew in 7.9% (93,2 Soles) among the population of 14 to 24 years old; in the group of 25 to 44 years old in 3.4% (69,0 Soles) and; among the population of 45 years old and older in 6.4% (129,1 Soles).
Greater growth of average income in Construction and Services
During the mobile quarter March-April-May of 2024, the average monthly income of workers in the Construction sector increased in 7.8% (153,4 Soles), followed by Services 7.0% (139,2 Soles) and Manufacturing 1.4% (24,6 Soles); meanwhile, Commerce sector decreased in 2.7% (-44,9 Soles).
