53.8% of women reported ever being victims of psychological, physical or sexual violence in 2023

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics when presenting the results of the 2023 Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES), informed that 53.8% of women reported ever being victims of psychological, physical or sexual violence, by the husband or live-in partner; percentage lower to that obtained during 2022 (55.7%).
Among the most employed type of violence outstood the psychological and/or verbal violence that was declared with greater frequency (49.3%), followed by physical violence (27.2%) and sexual violence (6.5%).
ENDES is a statistical research that provides updated information and allows to analyze the change, trends and determinants of fertility, mortality, as well as a set of indicators of maternal and child health and indicators of non-communicable and communicable diseases in the country.
This survey in the current year, turns 38 years of validity, was carried out in its early-stage in fortnightly intervals: ENDES I (1986), ENDES II (1991-1992), ENDES III (1996) and ENDES IV (2000). And since October of 2023, developed operating procedures of annual periodicity.
45.3% of women sought help in people close to them
During the year 2023, 45.3% of women interviewed stated they relied in persons close to them to sought help when they experienced physical violence. From this total, (39.0%) sought help in their mother, followed by (19.9%) that sought help in a friend or neighbor, (15.5%) in sister, (14.9%) in their father, among the main ones.

Among the reasons declared by women that were victims of physical violence and that not sought help, 45.0% informed that it was not necessary, 16.8% said they felt shame and 11.1% said they did not know where to go or they do not know the assistance services.
OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY
In Peru, during the year 2023, 37.2% of persons of 15 years old and older registered overweight, a figure lower in 0.3 percentage points, to the registered in the year 2022 (37.55). According to sex, it was higher in men (38.0%), than in women (36.5%). Regarding the residence area, its incidence was higher in the urban area (38.2%), than in the rural area (32.9%).
According to natural region, people of 15 years old and older that suffered of overweight lives in greater proportion in the Coast (38.0%), followed by the Highlands (36.4%) and the Jungle (34.7%).
On the other hand, the incidence of obesity in persons of 15 years old and older decreased from 25.6% in the year 2022 to 24.1% in the year 2023. And affects more women (28.0%) than men (19.9%). Meanwhile, by residence area, 26.3% lives in urban area and 14.0% in rural area.
OLDER ADULT
14.1% of the population of the country are 60 years old and older
The INEI informed that, during the year 2023, 14.1% of the population are persons of 60 years old and older of this total, 7.9% lives in overcrowded households; in addition, 12.0% lives alone or with persons that are not family members and 32.0% lives just with persons of 17 years old or younger.
59.7% of the population of 60 years old and older had a comorbidity within the year
The 2023 ENDES reported that, 59.7% of persons of 60 years old and older of the country, had at least one comorbidity such as: arterial hypertension, overweight, obesity and diabetes mellitus.
Among the risk factors that affects this population group, outstood the hypertension, disease that affected 50.2% in the year 2023 and reduced in 1.3 percentage points, compared to the year 2022 (51.5%). On the other hand, it increased the trend of diabetes mellitus by going from 13.7% in 2022 to 14.0% in the year 2023.
26.5% of the population of 60 years old and older had overweight
In Peru, the population of 60 years old and older with overweight was of 26.8% and in the year 2022 decreased to 26.5%, in the year 2023. Likewise, the obesity in this population group, reduced from 16.9% in the year 2022 to 14.3% during the year 2023.

During the year 2023, 26.2% of the population of 60 years old and older performed a visual acuity assessment testing, followed by the 22.7% of the population was diagnosed of cataract and 30.5% that presented a difficulty to see from far away.
