This Sunday, nearly 9 million of mothers commemorate their day in Peru

The second Sunday of May, 8 million 988 thousand 842 women commemorate Mother’s Day in Peru. This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). From this total, 60.1% are in childbearing age, it means they are 15 to 49 years old; 16.8% are between 50 and 59 years old and 23.1% are older adults, it means, they are 60 years old and older. It must be pointed out that, 3.8% (348,207) of mothers are 80 years old and older.

Mothers have on average 1,9 children
According to the results of the Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES), as of 2023, Peruvian mothers have on average 1,9 children. According with the place of residence, in the rural area women have 2,8 children meanwhile, in the urban area women have 1,7 children.
According to education level, women with superior education level have in average 1,5 children; meanwhile, those women does not achieve to study any education level have in average 4,6 children, those women with elementary education level have in average 3,1 children, those women with high-school education level have in average 2,2 children.
Most women have their first child at the age of 22
At national level, the age of mothers at the moment of the birth of her first child is of 22.2 years old. According with the level of education reached, those mothers that have high-school education level had their first child at the age of 20.7, with elementary education level had their first child at the age of 19,3 and those mothers that have early education level and without education level at the age of 19,5.
42 out of 100 women that are mothers have high-school education
According to the education level reached, 42.4% of mothers have high-school education, 30.7% of mothers have some level or year of elementary education or lower education level, meanwhile, 15.8% have non-university superior education level and 11.1% have a university superior education level, including postgraduate degree.
35 out of 100 mothers are common-law partners
According to civil state of mothers aged 18 years old and older, 34.7% are common-law partners, 29.4% are married, 19.7% separated, 9.7% are widow, 5.6% are single and 1.0% divorced.
67.9% of women participate in the economic activity of the country
67.9% of mothers participate in the labor market, either in condition of employed or are actively seeking employment. It is worth to mention that the employment rate of women that are mothers reached 95.7%.
48.0% of working mother are independent
Regarding occupation category, 48.0% of mothers that work is independent, 40.3% are salaried, 11.4% are in condition of unpaid family worker.
68.7% of working mothers are engaged in Services and Commerce activities
During the year 2023, 68.7% of mothers that have work are working in the following economic activities: Services (40.7%) and Commerce (28.0%); 22.5% in Agriculture, Fishing, Mining, 8.3% in Manufacture and 0.4% in Construction.
78.9% of mothers work in companies of 1 to 10 workers
According with the size of companies in which they perform the economic activities, 78.9% of women of 15 years old and older they do it in companies of 1 to 10 employees, 16.4% work in economic entities of 51 and more employees and 4.6% in companies of 11 to 50 employees.
