Consumer prices of Lima Metropolitan area decreased 0.05% in April of 2024

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the month of April of 2024, the Consumer Price Index of Lima Metropolitan area reduced in 0.05%, with an accumulated variation of the first four months of the year of 1.54%; and in the last twelve months (May 2023 – April 2024) reached 2.42%. 
 
In the technical report Variation of the Price Indicators of the Economy is stated that the result of the month was based, mainly in the decrease of prices registered in the following divisions Foods and Beverages, Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.86%). Meanwhile, that the prices increase were registered in the following areas Accommodation, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (0.25%), Transportation (0.35%), Restaurants and Hotels (0.29%), Goods and Services (0.20%), Education (0.16%), Health (0.27%), Furnitures, Household Items and Routine Household Maintenance (0.12%), Recreation and Culture (0.06%), Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics (0.05%) and Communications (0.03%). Meanwhile, the division of Clothing Items and Footwear did not showed variation. 
 
The reduction of prices that was registered by the Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverage division was based in the lower prices registered in fishes and seafood (-7.9%) such as horse mackerel (-33.4%), hake (-8.6%), mackerel (-7.2%), mussels (-4,4%), Bonito fish (-3,6%) and Lisa fish (-1.1%); also the meat (-6.2%), due to the reduction of prices of the eviscerated chicken (-13.5%), chicken cuts: wings (-8.8%), leg (-7.7%), breast (-7.1%) and chicken innards (-5.3%); and oils and fats (-1.5%) such as packaged vegetable oil (-3.2%). 
 
On the other hand, the prices of vegetables, legumes including potato and other tubers increased (2.8%) such as green peas (30.1%), tomato (25.7%), onion (14.1%), whole garlic (13.4%), leek (12.0%), American green beans (10.2%), cauliflower (7.3%), yellow sweet potato (3.2%) and Macre squash (2.6%). 
 
Likewise, milk, cheese and eggs (1.9%) due to the increase of chicken eggs (6.4%); fruits (1.9%) due to the increase in the price of the cucumber (37.8%), blueberries (22.4%), passion fruit (20.9%), mango (20.2%), lemon (10.4%), white grape (6.0%), silk banana (4.5%), regular apple (4.4%), Delicia apple (3.6%) and strawberry (2.6%). Likewise, the increase of prices was observed in sugar, marmalade, honey, chocolate and sugar sweets (0.3%) due to the increase in the price of white sugar (0.7%) and brown sugar (0.2%). 
 
In Transportation, the prices of fuels for vehicles increased (3.7%) vehicles such as gasohol (4.4%), vehicular natural gas (0.6%) and Diesel petroleum (0.1%); and also, the transportation of passengers by road (0.2%) as well as the fare in the moto- taxi (3,5%). 
Meanwhile, the prices of the fare of the inter-province omnibus (-12.0%), liquefied petroleum gas for vehicles (-2.0%) and transportation of passengers by air (-0.9%) as well as domestic air ticket decreased (-10.2%).
 
In Restaurants and Hotel, the prices of food services in restaurants and in similar facilities increased (0.3%) such as breakfast in restaurants (1.0%), Breaded chicken (0,7%), fried chicken (0,7%), menu in restaurants (0.4%), chicken soup (0.3%) and marine plates (0,3%). Likewise, the prices in the services of beverages in restaurants and similar facilities increased (0.2%) such as the blended fruit juice (1.0%), carbonated beverages (0.2%) and served beer (0.2%). 
 
In the division of consumption Accommodation, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels, the prices of domestic propane gas (3.1%) and residential natural gas (0.1%) increased due to the tariff sheet in force since April 1 of 2024. 
 
Main products that registered reduction of prices
During the month of April of 2024, from the 586 products that are part of the family basket, 299 increased their price, 131 decreased and 156 products did not registered variation. The products that reported decrease on prices were: horse mackerel (-33.36%), green onions (-24.63%), coriander (-23.67%), ginger (-15,97%), eviscerated chicken (-13.53%), inter-province omnibus fare (-11.96%), mandarin (-11.42%) and ullucus (-10.68%). 
 
Meanwhile, the products with a higher increase in their prices were: cucumber (37.84%), green peas (30.06%), tomato (25.71%), Parrot fish (25.16%), blueberries (22.44%), passion fruit (20.87%), mango (20.16%) and red onion (14.11%). 
 
Products with high incidence in the monthly variation
The reduction of the consumer prices during the month of April of 2024, was influenced, mainly by the lower prices registered in food such as eviscerated chicken, horse mackerel, chicken breast and mandarin, as well as the inter province omnibus fare, that together contributed negatively with -0,433 percentage points to the variation of the month; dimmed by the increase of the prices in chicken eggs, onion, green peas, tomato and gasohol. 
 
Consumer prices without foods and energy increased 0.11%
During the month of April of 2024, the variation of the Consumer Price Index in Lima Metropolitan area, without considering foods and energy (underlying inflation) increased 0.11%.
 
Consumer prices at national level decreased 0.01%
During the month under analysis, the Consumer Price Index at National Level decreased 0.01%, with an accumulated variation as of the month of April of 1.36% and in the last twelve months (May 2023-April 2024) 2.11%. This behavior answers, mainly to the reduction of the prices of the consumption divisions of Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.55%), Recreation and Culture (-0.03%) and Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (-0.02%). 
 
On the other hand, increase of prices were registered in the following divisions: Communications (0.02%), Clothing Items and Footwear (0.04%), Furnitures, Household Items (0.05%), Education (0.17%), Transportation (0.18%), Goods and Different Services (0.22%), Restaurants and Hotels and Health (0.26% each one) and Accommodation, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (0.33%).
 
Price variation by cities
During the month under analysis 17 of the 26 cities where it calculates the Consumer Price Index registers increase of prices. The highest variations were registered in Moyobamba (0.77%), 
Tarapoto (0.42%), Ayacucho (0.34%), Cajamarca (0.33%) and Pucallpa (0.32%). Meanwhile, the decrease of prices showed the cities of Moquegua (-0.52%), Tacna (-0.37%), Tumbes (-0.20%) and Chiclayo (-0.19%).
 
Wholesale prices at national level reduced in 0.13%
During the month of April of 2024, the Wholesale Price Index decreased 0.13% due to lower prices reported the manufacturing national goods (chicken meat, preserved fish in pieces, industrial wheat flour, refined soy oil, long pasta, plastic bottles, diesel petroleum, construction rods and cotton yarn fibers) and livestock (live chicken and hen and beef cattle).
 
Nevertheless, the prices of agriculture products increased (onion, tomato, green peas, sweet potato, lemon, yucca and paddy rice); fishing (Parrot fish, boquichico and trout. As well, it was observed the drop of prices in imported goods (soy cakes, fertilizers: phosphate and nitrogenous, Steel sheets, PVC resins, automobiles, diesel petroleum, cyanide, vehicles for transportation, bulldozers, generators, carbon black, apples, lentils, wheat, hard yellow corn and not carded cotton).
 
Machinery and equipment prices decreased 0.42%
During the month under analysis, the Price Index of Machinery and Equipment decreased 0.42% due to the lower prices that showed the imported machinery and equipment for transportation (vehicles for transportation of goods and road tractor for semi-tractor); agriculture (agricultural tractors); industry (wheel loaders, vehicles for transportation of construction materials and industrial sowing machines); and other machinery (different electricity meters).
 
Likewise, it reduced the prices of machinery and equipment of national origin, for transportation (moto - taxi and car bodies); and other machinery (forklift trucks); nevertheless, it increases the prices of machinery and equipment for industry (fans of industrial use and bits for excavation); and agriculture (troughs).
 
Construction materials prices decreased 0.21%
During April of 2024, the Price Index of Construction Materials in Lima Metropolitan area decreased in 0.21% due to the drop of prices of six groups of the ten that are part of the indicator: tiles and mosaics (covering: for floor and wall); bricks (for roof ang King Kong bricks); metallics (construction rods, LAC steel sheets, LAC steel tubes and nails); glasses (templated glasses); tubes and plastic accessories (tubes: for electricity, water and sewerage); and woods (chipboards and plywood).
Nevertheless, it increases the prices of other groups such as electric supplies (power cables); aggregates (stone, concrete and sand); concrete structures (fiber corrugated sheets); on the other hand, the binders did not showed variation.
