Employed population in Lima Metropolitan area increased 4.6% in the mobile quarter January-February-March of 2024

According to the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN), during the same mobile quarter of the year 2023, the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area increased 4.6% (235 thousand 300 persons), and compared to the same mobile quarter of the year 2019 (pre-pandemic), increased in 11.0%. This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the technical report Situation of the Labor Market in Lima Metropolitan area.
 
During the mobile quarter under study, the employed population totalized 5 million 359 thousand 700 persons, from this total, 54.0% (2 million 892 thousand 800) are men and 46.0% (2 million 466 thousand 900) are women.  The female employed population grew in 3.9% (91 thousand 600) and the male employed population grew in 5.2% (143 thousand 700). 
 
The employed population of 45 years old and older increased in 10.7%
By age groups, the employed population of 45 years old and older increased in 10.7% (192 thousand) and in the employed population of 25 to 44 years old increased in 2.6% (66 thousand 400); meanwhile, it decreased in 2.9% (-23 thousand 200) in the employed population under 25 years old.
 
The employed population of all education levels increased
During the quarter under analysis, the employed population increased in 11.6% (42 thousand) between those that have elementary or lower education level, in those that have college education level increased in 8.9% (129 thousand 600), in those that reached a non-university superior education level increased in 5.6% (58 thousand 300) and between those that have high-school education level slightly increased in 0.2% (5 thousand 500).
 
Commerce and services activities invigorated job creation
During the mobile quarter observed comparing with the same mobile quarter of the year 2023, the employed population of Commerce sector increased in 6.5% (72 thousand), followed by Services in 6.4% (182 thousand 900); meanwhile it decreased in Manufacture 1.8% (-12 thousand 200) and Construction in 7.7% (-32 thousand 500). 
 
The employed population in companies of 1 to 10 workers increased in 6.0%
The employed population in the companies of 1 to 10 workers increased in 6.0% (190 thousand 500) and in the economic units of 51 and more workers in 5.1% (70 thousand 700); meanwhile, it decreased in the establishments of 11 to 50 workers in 4.6% (-26 thousand). 
 
Unemployment rate placed in 7.7%
During the mobile quarter January-February-March of the current year the unemployment in Lima Metropolitan area affected 7.7% of the EAP; higher result in 0.2 percentage point compared with the same mobile quarter of the year 2023 (7.5%). It is estimated in 447 thousand 500 persons that were looking for a job in Lima Metropolitan area, during the mobile quarter under analysis.
 
Unemployment affected 8.7% of women; meanwhile among the male population it affected in 6,8%. Likewise, it was observed a greater proportion among the population under 25 years old in 15.5% and in those that have high-school education level in 8.2%.
 
The population with suitable job in Lima Metropolitan area increased in 4.9%
During the mobile quarter of January-February-March of 2024, the population with suitable job increased in 4.9% and compared to the same mobile quarter of the year 2019, in 3.1%. On the other hand, during the mobile quarter observed, the underemployed population increased in 4.2% and compared to the same quarter of the year 2019 the underemployed population increased in 24.6%.
 
It is worth to mention that in Lima Metropolitan area, the population with suitable job totalized 3 million 151 thousand 100 persons. 
 
Average monthly income coming from work increased in 7.5% 
The INEI informed that the average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area placed in 1,979.20 Soles, a higher amount in 7.5% compared to the same mobile quarter of the year 2023 and compared to the same period of the year 2019 increased in 15.3%.
 
In all age groups increased the average monthly income
During the mobile quarter under analysis compared to the same mobile quarter of the year 2023, the average monthly income increased in the population of 25 to 44 years old in 10.7% (203.9 Soles), in the group of 14 to 24 years old the average monthly income increased in 4.3% (51.4 Soles) and in the group of 45 years old and older the average monthly income increased in 2.6% (52.4 Soles).
 
The income among the employed population of Manufacturing sector increased in 12.5%
The average monthly income of workers of Manufacturing sector increased in 12.5%, followed by Construction (11.1%) and Services (8.8%); meanwhile, it decreased in Commerce (4.8%).
