Employed population of Lima Metropolitan area increased 4.3% in the quarter December 2023-January-February 2024

During the mobile quarter December 2023-January-February 2024 compared to the same mobile quarter of 2023, the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area increased in 4.3% (220 thousand 300 persons). Meanwhile, the mobile quarter December 2019-January-February 2020 (pre pandemic), increased by 6.5% (325 thousand 300 persons). This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), in the technical report Labour Market Situation in Lima Metropolitan area, prepared with the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN).
 
During the mobile quarter under analysis, totalized 5 million 322 thousand 900 persons with employment in Lima Metropolitan area. From this total, 54.0% (2 million 874 thousand 700) are men and 46.0% (2 million 448 thousand 200) women.  The female employed population increased by 3.1% (73 thousand 200) and male employed population by 5.4% (147 thousand 100), compared to the same quarter of the last year. 
 
The employed population of 45 years old and over increased by 11.0%
During the quarter under analysis, the employed population of 45 years old and over increased by 11.0% (197 thousand persons), followed by the population of 25 to 44 years old with 2.1% (52 thousand 400); meanwhile, the employed population under 25 years old decreased by 3.8% (-29 thousand 200), compared with the same quarter of the last year.
 
Employed population of all education levels enter the job market
According to the education level reached, in Lima Metropolitan area, the employed population with elementary or lower education level increased by 13.7% (46 thousand 700), followed of those that achieved to study university education level increased by 5.6% (82 thousand 800), those that achieved to study non-university superior education level increased by 5.0% (52 thousand 800), as well as in those that have high-school education level by 1.7% (38 thousand). 
 
Commerce and Services sectors boosted the labor market in Lima Metropolitan area
During the mobile quarter under analysis, the employed population in the Commerce sector grew by 6.6% (71 thousand 700) and Services sector grew by 5.1% (148 thousand 200); meanwhile, in Construction sector reduced by 3.9% (-15 thousand 700) and in Manufacturing sector reduced by 0.2% (-1 thousand 100).
 
The employed population in establishment of 1 to 10 workers increased by 6.5% 
By comparing with the same mobile quarter of 2023, the employed population showed a growth in the companies of 1 to 10 workers in 6.5% (203 thousand 200) and in the economic units of 51 to more workers in 2.4% (33 thousand 300). Nevertheless, it reduced in the establishments of 11 to 50 workers in 2.9% (-16 thousand 300).
 
Unemployment rate of Lima Metropolitan area was of 7.3%
The INEI informed that during the mobile quarter December 2023-January-February 2024, the unemployment rate of Lima Metropolitan area placed in 7.3% and compared with the same mobile quarter of the last year, did not have variation. It is estimated that 418 thousand 800 persons sought jobs, during the mobile quarter under study.
 
The population with suitable employment in Lima Metropolitan area increased by 3.4%
The population with suitable employment increased by 3.4% (105 thousand persons). Meanwhile, compared with the same mobile quarter December 2019-January-February 2020, decreased by 0.5% (-17 thousand persons). In Lima Metropolitan area, the population with suitable employment for the quarter under study totalized 3 million 153 thousand 400 persons.
 
In addition, the underemployed working population increased by 5.6% (115 thousand 400). The underemployed by insufficiency of working hours (visible underemployment) decreased by 0.5% (-2 thousand 100); meanwhile, those underemployed by incomes (invisible underemployment) grew by 7.3% (117 thousand 500). Compared to the quarter December 2019-January-February 2020, visible underemployment decreased by 37.2% (-260 thousand 800); nevertheless, the invisible underemployment increased by 53.6% (603 thousand 100). 
 
Average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area registered a growth of 8.1%
During the mobile quarter under analysis, average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area placed in 1,982.30 Soles, amount greater in 8.1% than the one reported in the same mobile quarter of 2023.
 
Employed population in the Manufacturing sector increased its income in 22.3%
During the mobile quarter December 2023 and January-February 2024, the average monthly income of workers in the Manufacturing sector increased by 22.3%, followed of Services with 9.0%, Construction with 6.5%; meanwhile it decreased in Commerce sector with 1.4%.
