Fourteen departments presented a positive behavior in the fourth quarter of 2023

In the fourth quarter of 2023, the productive activity of fourteen departments presented a positive behavior, outstanding Huancavelica (13.1%) driven the electricity, gas and water; mining and construction activities. Followed by Huánuco (8.4%), Amazonas (7.7%), Ucayali (6.6%), Tacna (5.0%), Moquegua (4.7%) and Pasco (4.6%). This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the technical report Indicator of the Productive Activity by Department.
 
Meanwhile, ten departments presented unfavorable behaviors registering the following four departments the most negative rates, such as Lambayeque (-3.4%) and La Libertad (-2,6%) due to the reduction of the agriculture, construction and telecommunications; meanwhile, Junín (-3.3%) and Arequipa (-3.2%) influenced by the mining, construction and telecommunications. Likewise, it decreased in Lima (-0.9%) due to the decrease of the manufacturing, telecommunications and construction sectors; among those that have more incidence. Nevertheless, they contributed together with more than 57.0% of the total national.
 
According to geographic zones, the contraction of the economy of the country was determined by the lower production in the North (-1.5%) and Center (-0.5%) due to adverse weather conditions; on the other hand, it registered a positive performance, the East (4.0%) and South (0.9%) zones.
 
Huancavelica grew in 13.1% due to the dynamism of the Electricity, Gas and Water sector
The productive activity of the department of Huancavelica increased in 13.1%, after registering a decrease for eight months in a row, driven by the Electricity, Gas and Water sector reflected in the greater generation of electric energy in the following power stations Cerro del Águila, Mantaro and Restitución. As well as a greater production of potable water in the company EMAPA Huancavelica S.A. 
 
Likewise, mining activity expanded due to the copper extraction, favored by the start of operations of the company Operadores Concentrados Peruanos in the Cobriza mine, at the end of February of 2023. Same trend, showed the Construction sector encouraged by the Government’s National investment in the improvement of roads and works in the creation of flood barrier in the “National University of Huancavelica” in the province of Huancavelica. 
 
Electric sector influenced in the development of the economy in Huánuco that increased in 8.4%
The production of the department of Huánuco increased by 8.4%, determined by the Electricity subsector, due to the greater of electric energy generation in the hydraulic power stations of Chaglla, 8 de Agosto, Marañón and El Carmen.
Likewise, in the agriculture sector outstood the production of potato, paddy rice, hard yellow corn, dried bean, beef cattle, fresh milk and ovine cattle. An in the mining activity, were reported greater volumes extracted of zinc, silver, lead and copper in the Mining Company Raura, associated to the progressive restart of its operations. 
 
The production of Tacna increased by 5.0% favored by the mining activity
The economy of Tacna grew in 5.0% and added two positive quarters in a row, influenced by the mining activity that registered the greater extraction of copper, molybdenum and silver in the Mining Company Southern Perú (mine Toquepala); meanwhile, the gold production decreased in the Minsur company. 
 
Likewise, the Transportation sector increased due to passenger road transport, before the significant vehicular flow during the long holiday weekend of All Saint’s Day; also contributed the air transport of passengers. 
 
The same behavior, showed the Electricity, Gas and Water sector associated to the greater generation of electric energy in the hydraulic power station of Aricota I; and the production of potable water in the company EPS Tacna S.A.
 
Mining production prompted the growth of the economy of Moquegua in 4.7%
The productive activity of Moquegua increased in 4.7% and accumulated six quarters of consecutive growths, encouraged by the expansion of mining activity associated to the greater extraction of copper and molybdenum in the company Anglo American Quellaveco that produce molybdenum since May of 2023.
 
In the Fishing sector increased the quantities extracted of horse mackerel due to the opening of capture; and the landing of hydrobiological species destined to de frozen in the port of Ilo. Likewise, the Transportation sector grew due to passenger transportation service by road, on the occasion of the celebration of the 482° Anniversary of Moquegua; together with the air passenger transportation in the Airport of Ilo. 
 
Productive activity of Cusco increased by 4.5% due to mining activity
The economy of the department of Cusco increased in 4.5% and presented five quarters of favorable results, determined by the mining production due to the greater extraction of copper and gold in the companies Hudbay Perú and Compañía Minera Antapaccay; in addition, it increased the molybdenum and silver. Meanwhile, in the hydrocarbons subsector it reduced the exploitation of natural and liquid gas in the company Pluspetrol Perú in the lots 56 and 88. 
 
Likewise, the Transportation sector grew driven by the inland transport service; the air transport before the restart of flights Cusco-Santiago de Chile (Latam Airlines) and the opening of the routes Bogotá-Cusco and Cusco-La Paz (Avianca); and rail transport.
 
Economy of Lambayeque contracted in 3.4% affected by the agricultural sector 
The production of the department of Lambayeque decreased in 3.4% and reported a negative trend by five quarters in a row, influenced by the Agribusiness sector before the reduction of the blueberries crop by the effects of the “Coastal El Niño” phenomenon, grape, asparagus and coffee; in addition of the poultry production, fresh milk and eggs. 
In the Construction sector decreased the physical progress of the Local Governments in road infrastructure in the province of Lambayeque. In addition, in the Electricity sector it was caused due to the low production in the Eten-Reserva Fría power station and the null generation of electric energy in the thermic power station Recka.
 
Productive performance of Junín decreased in 3.3% due to the lower mining activity
The economy of the department of Junín decreased in 3.3%, registering a decrease for five periods in a row, caused by the mining activity caused to the limited extraction of copper in the Mining Company Minera Chinalco Perú, molybdenum; and zinc due to the temporary suspension of operations in the Mining Company San Ignacio de Morococha. 
 
In addition, the Construction sector was affected before the reduced public investment of the Local Governments in road infrastructure and in the Educational Institution “Simón Bolívar”, province of Chupaca. Nevertheless, it increased in the Electricity, Gas and Water sector driven by the generation of electric energy in the hydraulic power stations Chimay, La Virgen, Yaupi and Yanango; added to the production of potable water.
 
The economy of Arequipa decreased in 3.2% due to the contraction of the mining activity
The productive activity of the department of Arequipa reduced in 3.2%, determined by the mining activity before the lower extraction of copper and molybdenum in the Mining Society Cerro Verde; as well as the zinc, lead and silver in the Company of Minas Buenaventura; meanwhile, it increased the procuration of gold.
 
In the Manufacturing sector it was registered a contraction of the manufacturing industries of other non-metallic mineral products (cement); the production of precious metals and non-ferrous metals (copper); and the production of frozen products made of fish.
 
Likewise, in the Construction sectordecreased the private investment in self-construction; decreased the private investment in self-construction; of the Local Governments in road infrastructure of interconnection in the district of Cerro Colorado, province of Arequipa; and of the Regional Government with works in the health establishment of “Maritza Campos Díaz” in the same district.
 
Manufacturing activity impact in the production of La Libertad that reduced in 2.6%
The economy of the department of La Libertad contracted in 2.6%, reported a negative trend for three periods in a row, influenced by the Manufacturing sector that reported a decrease in their industries of fishmeal and fish oil in the Chicama port; canned fruits and vegetables; sugar refining and meat processing.
 
Likewise, in the Agricultural sector reduced the blueberry cultivation, main crop destined for foreign markets and agroindustry, due to adverse weather conditions during the flowering stage; tarhui, onion and sweet pepper; nevertheless, it increased the artichoke, grape and asparagus. In the livestock subsector decreased the production of fresh milk, eggs and poultry.
 
Likewise, in the Construction sector decreased the physical progress of the Local Governments, in works of roads and sidewalks in the district and province of Virú; and works in the neighborhood road in the district of Chungay, province of Sánchez Carrión. 
 
Economy of Lima slightly decreased in 0.9% due to Manufacture sector
The productive activity of the department of Lima decreased in 0.9% and showed a negative result for fourth quarters in a row, determined by the Manufacturing sector reflected in the short manufacturing of other non-metallic mineral products (cement); refining of zinc; refining of petroleum; production of frozen food production of marine resources; and preparation of clothing items.
 
In the Telecommunications sector there were reduced the minutes of calls (mobile and fixed lines) and connections of subscription TV. Meanwhile, the Construction sector contracted due to the reduction of the private investment in construction of multi-family households, offices and shopping centers and Local Government in the works of the northern section of the Metropolitan transport.
 
It is worth to mention that the national production in 2023 decreased by 0.6%, due to the lower production of eleven departments, contributed in this result, Puno (-7.4%), Lambayeque (-5.7%), Áncash (-3.5%), Junín (-3.0%), La Libertad (-2.4%) and Lima (-1.4%); meanwhile, it grew in Moquegua (27.0%), Apurímac (6.4%), Huánuco (6.1%), Cusco (3.7%) and Piura (3.3%), mainly.
