Employed population of Metropolitan Lima reached 5 million 295 thousand 400 people during the mobile quarter November-December 2023-January

By comparing the mobile quarter November-December 2023-January of 2024 with the same mobile quarter of the last year, the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area increased in 4.0% (201 thousand 700 persons). Meanwhile, comparted to the quarter November-December 2019-January 2020 (Pandemic), grew in 5.1% (258 thousand 100 persons).
This was informed that the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the technical report Situation of the Labor Market in Lima Metropolitan area, prepared with the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN). Also, informed that the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 295 thousand 400 persons.
By employment level, the population with suitable employment increased in 3.8% (114 thousand 600) and totalized 3 million 106 thousand 100 persons. Meanwhile, compared to the same mobile quarter November-December 2019-January 2020 decreased in 4.5% (-145 thousand 200 persons).
On the other hand, the underemployed population increased 4.1% (87 thousand), compared to the mobile quarter November-December 2022-January 2023 and compared to the quarter November-December 2019-January 2020 increased in 22.6% (403 thousand 200 persons).
The male employed population grew in 4.2% and female employed population grew in 3.7%
In the mobile quarter under analysis, the male employed population increased in 4.2% (114 thousand 500) and the female employed population grew in 3.7% (87 thousand 100), compared to the same quarter of the last year.
Employed population aged 45 years old and over increased in 11.0%
According to age group, the population of 45 years old and older increased in 11.0% (195 thousand 700), followed by the population of 25 to 44 years old with 1.4% (36 thousand 700); meanwhile, it decreased in 4.1% (-30 thousand 700) in the population under 25 years old.
The employed population with non-university superior education level increased in 8.6%
The INEI informed that the employed population with non-university superior education level increased in 8.6% (88 thousand 800), followed by those that studied university education in 4.4% (65 thousand 100), those that have elementary or lower education level increased in 3.4% (12 thousand 200), as well as those with high-school education level increased in 1.6% (35 thousand 600).
Employed population in Services sector grew in 6.4%
During the mobile quarter under analysis compared with the same mobile quarter of 2023, the employed population increased in Services sector in 6.4% (183 thousand 900), Commerce in 4.5% (49 thousand 700); meanwhile, it decreased in Construction 9.4% (-37 thousand 300) and Manufacturing in 0.5% (-3 thousand 400).
Unemployment rate placed in 7.2%
The INEI informed that during the mobile quarter November-December 2023 and January 2024, the unemployment rate of Lima Metropolitan area placed in 7.2%, being 0.8 percentage point lower than in the same mobile quarter of the year 2023 (8.0%). It is estimated in 409 thousand 700 persons the people that were seeking employment in Lima Metropolitan area in this quarter under analysis.
It is worth to mention that, the unemployment affected more women than men. Thus, 8.6% of the economically active women were unemployed and in the case of men the 5.9%. By age groups, unemployment affected in a greater proportion to the young population (15.9%).
Average monthly income coming from work increased in 6.8%
During the mobile quarter under analysis, the average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area placed in 1,926.10 Soles, increasing in 6.8%, compared to the same quarter of the last year.
The average monthly income in the population of 25 to 44 years old grew in 10.8%
During the mobile quarter under analysis compared to the same mobile quarter of the year 2023, the average monthly income increased in 10.8% (201.30 Soles) among those that are 25 to 44 years old and it increased in 2.4% (46.0 Soles) in the age group of 45 years old and older; nevertheless, it decreased in the age group of 14 to 24 years old in 2.0% (-24.40 Soles).
