Santiago de Surco was the district of Lima Metropolitan area where more weddings were celebrated in 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics and informatics (INEI) on the occasion of Valentine’s Day festivity.
Based on data collected by the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC), the INEI also informed that in Peru were registered a total of 85,300 marriages in 2022, registering Lima Metropolitan area the highest number of civil unions (25,998), on the other hand, Madre de Dios had the lowest registry with 441 marriages.
In Lima Metropolitan area, the district of Santiago de Surco headed the list with 1,786 registered marriages, while Santa María del Mar reported just 17 registered marriages.
At national level, December is the month where more marriages were celebrated, it reached 8,792, followed by September (7,789) and October (7,759).
More women than men, under 25 years old, got married
When it comes to the age of the grooms of the registered marriages in 2022, 57.8% were between 25 to 39 years old. While, in the side of the brides, 61.9% were in that range. Likewise, the proportion of women under 25 years old that got married was of 11.4%, a higher figure than that of grooms of the same age group (6.1%).
San Martín de Porres is the district where more divorces were registered
According to RENIEC data, in 2022 were registered 19,251 divorced in the country, of which 11,805 (61.3%) were registered in Lima Metropolitan area, followed by the Constitutional Province of Callao with a 7.8% (1,498). At Lima Metropolitan area level, San Martín de Porres is the district with more registered divorces (768), followed by San Juan de Lurigancho and Santiago de Surco, each one with 674.
There are more cohabitants and married in rural areas than in the urban area
Likewise, according to the information of the National Households Survey (ENAHO), in 2022, 36.6% of Peruvian population of more than 12 years old informed they are single as civil status, while the 24.1% informed being cohabitant, 23.4% married, 5.5% widow, 0.6% divorced and 9.7% separated. By place of residence, in the rural are there is a greater proportion of cohabitants and married than in the urban area. In the rural area, 27% informed being cohabitant and 27.7% informed being married. In the urban area these proportions were 23.4% and 22.4%, respectively.
84% of foreign immigrants older than 14 years old are single
According to the National Superintendence of Migration, up to September of 2023, 84% of the foreign immigrants of 14 years old and older informed being single, 11.8% informed being married, 1.2% divorced, 0.4% widow and 2.6% did not specified its civil state.
Regarding the Venezuelan immigration of 14 years old and over, up to 2023, 89.2% informed being single, 6.5% informed being married, 0.9% divorced, 0.3% widow and 3.0% did not specified its civil state, according to preliminary information of Migrations.
Ica is the department where more women use contraceptive methods
On the other hand, according to the information of the Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES), in 2022, 83.6% of women aged 15 to 49 years old used at least once some contraceptive method. While the current use of some contraceptive method was of 77.9% in this age group. By department, Ica registered the greatest percentage of women that use some measure to avoid pregnancy (83.5%), followed by La Libertad (83.0%) and Junín (81.3%). In Lima Metropolitan area this proportion totalized 78.7%.
