Employed population in Lima Metropolitan area increased in 3.9% in the year 2023

During the year 2023, the employed population in Lima Metropolitan area increased in 3.9% (197 thousand 600 persons) and reached 5 million 217 thousand persons, compared to the year 2022. Compared to the level of the year 2019, increased in 6.2% (302 thousand 900 persons). This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the technical report Situation of the Labor Market in Lima Metropolitan area, prepared with the results of the Permanent Survey of the National Employment (EPEN).
Meanwhile, during the 4th quarter of the year 2023, grew in 4.6% (235 thousand 100 persons) compared with the same quarter of the year 2022.
Female employed population increased in 6.4%
In the year 2023, the female population is the one that most enter to the labor market by increasing in 6.4% (143 thousand 900), meanwhile the male population increased in 2.0% (53 thousand 600 persons). From the total of the employed population, 46.2% (2 million 409 thousand 400) are women and the 53.8% (2 million 807 thousand 600) are men.
During the 4th quarter of 2023, the same behavior was observed, the female employed population increased in 6.7% (154 thousand 300 persons) and the male employed population in 2.9% (80 thousand 800 persons).
The employed population of 45 years old and older grew in 11.1%
The employed population of 45 years old and older increased in 11.1% (191 thousand 100), during the year 2023. Followed by the population of 25 to 44 years old in 2.0% (50 thousand 800); meanwhile, the employed population under 25 years old decreased in 5.7% (-44 thousand 300).
During the 4th quarter, the employed population of 45 years old and older grew in 12.6% (224 thousand 200), followed by the population of 25 to 44 years old in 1.1% (27 thousand 900). Nevertheless, the employed population under 25 years old decreased in 2.4% (-17 thousand 100).
Employed population with university education level increased in 17.2%
During the year 2023, the employed population with university education level increased in 17.2% (220 thousand 100), those that achieved to study non-university superior education level increased in 15.9% (153 thousand 500); meanwhile, it decreased among those that studied high-school education level in 6.8% (-162 thousand 500) and in those that had elementary or lower education level in 3.5% (-13 thousand 500).
During the last quarter of the year 2023, the employed population with non-university superior education level increased in 8.8% (94 thousand 200), among those that achieved to study university education level increased in 5.7% (83 thousand 800), in the population with high-school education level increased in 2.5% (55 thousand 300) and in those with elementary or lower education level it increased in 0.5% (1 thousand 900).
In Services sector the employed population increased in 7.3%
In the year 2023, the employed population grew in the Services sector in 7.3% (201 thousand 600); followed by Commerce in 2.0% (21 thousand 900) and Manufacturing in 0.6% (3 thousand 800). Nevertheless, in Construction the employed population decreased 7.0% (-28 thousand 700).
Meanwhile, during the 4th quarter, the Commerce sector it increased in 8.5% (91 thousand 600), followed of Services 5.8% (169 thousand 200 persons); nevertheless, it reduced in Manufacturing in 0.7% (-4 thousand 500) and in Construction 2.7% (-10 thousand).
The population with suitable job grew in 6.6%
The employed population with suitable job increased in 6.6% (190 thousand 100) compared to the year 2022 and totalized 3 million 61 thousand 200 persons. If we compared with the year 2019 it decreased in 3.5 % (-110 thousand 500).
On the other hand, in 2023 the underemployed population grew in 0.4% (7 thousand 400 persons) compared to 2022. Compared to the year 2019 an increase of 23.7% (413 thousand 400) was observed.
During the last quarter of the year 2023, the employed population with suitable job in Lima Metropolitan area increased in 3.6%. If we compare with the last quarter of the year 2019 it reduced in 6.1 % ( -202 thousand 800).
The underemployed population during the fourth quarter of 2023 grow in 6.1% compared to the fourth quarter of 2022. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2019 increases in 29.8% (507 thousand 700).
The unemployment rate in Lima Metropolitan area placed in 6.8%
During the year 2023, the unemployment rate of Lima Metropolitan area placed in 6.8%, being 1.0 percentage point lower than the year 2022 (7.8%). In absolute figures it is estimated in 379 thousand 700 persons, that are actively looking for a job.
During the 4th quarter it placed in 6.4%, lower in 0.7 percentage point compared to the same mobile quarter of the year 2022 (7.1%).
The average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area increased in 11.4%
During the year 2023, the average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area placed in 1,909.80 Soles, compared with the year 2022 increased in 11.4% (195.10 Soles). The income of men increased in 10.8% (211.60 Soles) and the income of women increase in 13.4% (189.70 Soles). The average monthly income of men placed in 2,168.30 Soles and that of women in 1,602.50 Soles. The income of women meant 73.9% of the income of men.
