Department of San Martín led the production of paddy rice in October of 2023

During October of 2023, the production of paddy rice outstood in the department of San Martín (34.9%) and registered a participation of 47.9%, strengthening its position as the first producer of this crop oriented to the domestic market. This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the technical report Peru: Departmental Economic Outlook.
Likewise, the production of this cereal grew in the departments of Ucayali (61.7%), Huánuco (24.0%) and Junín (7.1%), among others; while it decreased in Amazonas (-36.4%) and Madre de Dios (-1.2%).
At national level, the production of paddy rice reached 177 thousand 628 tons and was higher in 13.8% compared to October of the last year (156 thousand 78 tons), supported in the greater crops and good weather conditions that favored the growth of this crop.
Production of potato was affected in eight departments
The production of potato reduced mainly in the departments of Arequipa (-39.3%), Junín (-30.7%), Huancavelica (-25.4%), Cajamarca (-21.8), La Libertad (-16.5%) and Lima (-3.1%); as well as in Ancash (-62.8%) and Tacna (-34.9%); nevertheless, domestic market oriented, this crop grew in the producer areas of Ica (76.7%) and Huánuco (2.1%), that together contributed with the 44.2% of the national total.
Potato production, at national level totalized 198 thousand 83 tons and contracted in 10.5% compared to the same month of the last year (221 thousand 301 tons), influenced by the lower sown areas and unfavorable weather conditions that impacted in the growth of plantations and the regular plant development of the crop.
Poultry production decreased in 23 departments
The INEI informed that the poultry production was affected in 23 departments of the country, it was the case of the main producers such as Arequipa (-6.7%), La Libertad (-3.5%) and Ica
(-2.1%); nevertheless, they contributed with the 31.2% of the total poultry production.
On the other hand, Lima is considered the first producer department, it registered an increase of 1.1%, concentrating the 56.5% of the national total.
Across the country, the poultry production decreased by 1.4% compared to the same month of the last year, as a consequence of a lower placement of BB chicken meat line due to the increased costs of food supplies, such as soy and hard yellow corn.
Copper production at national level increased by 2.1%
During October of the current year, the copper production increased in 2.1% compared to the same month of 2022, keeping a positive performance of 14 months in a row, driven by the higher volumes of extraction reported by the Mining Antapaccay, Southern Perú Copper Corporation, Anglo American Quellaveco, Hudbay Perú, Sociedad Minera Corona, Minera Colquisiri and Cerro Verde.
At departmental level, the copper production outstood in the departments of Cusco (23.9%), Tacna (20.2%), Moquegua (1.0%) and Arequipa (0.6%), that contributed with the 53.4% of the total extracted. Meanwhile, it was registered the lower level of production in Junín (-19.7%), Ica (-18.2%), Pasco (-2.4%), Apurímac (-2.2%) and Ancash (-0.3%).
Electricity production grew in 12 departments
The production of electric energy showed a positive behavior. Among the departments that outstood were Ucayali (176.4%), Moquegua (34.5%), Pasco (33.7%), Ica (29.2%), Junín (18.7%), Piura (16.3%), Ancash (9.0%) and Lima (0.4%). On the other hand, it reduced in Huánuco (-16.5%), Arequipa (-15.9%), Cusco (-4.4%) and Huancavelica (-2.0%), among those that more negatively influenced.
At national level, the electricity production increased by 2.7% compared to October of the year 2022, explained by the greater generation of energy of thermic origin mainly in the power stations of Santa Rosa II, Ventanilla, Chilca I, Chilca II and Las Flores. The same trend reported the generation of hydraulic energy in the power stations of Chimay, Restitución, Moyopampa, Yuncán and Cañón del Pato; as well as Chaglla due to the restart of operations, after two months without production, due to the lack of rain.
In addition, the production of renewable energy increased due to the increase of Eolic and solar generation.
Revenues collected by internal taxes decreased by 7.8%
During the month under analysis, the incomes collected due to internal taxes amounted 9 thousand 897 million 949 thousand Soles, a lower amount in 7.8% compared to collected in the same month of the year 2022 (10 thousand 739 million 233 thousand Soles), due to the lower payments of income tax of third category, value added tax by self-employed person and the selective excise tax.
Among the departments that had unfavorable results were Lima (-8.9%), Arequipa (-6.2%) and Piura (-5.7%); in spite of that, they contributed with the 90.8% of the total gotten at national level. Meanwhile, the collection in Pasco (22.8%), Cusco (20.1%), La Libertad (9.7%), Ancash (6.1%) and Ica (4.1%), grew among others.
