Employed population of Lima Metropolitan area increased 5.2% in the quarter September-October-November of 2023

According to the results of the Permanent Survey of the National Employment (EPEN) of the mobile quarter September-October-November 2023, the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 291 thousand 400 persons and increased by 5.2% (259 thousand persons) compared with the same mobile quarter of the year 2022 and compared to the same quarter of the year 2019 (pre-pandemic), increased by 6.6% (329 thousand 500 persons). This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the technical report Situation of the Labor Market in Lima Metropolitan area.
According to levels of employment, the population with suitable job reached 3 million 62 thousand 900 persons and grew by 2.5% (73 thousand 400 persons). Nevertheless, compared with the same quarter of the year 2019, decreased by 5.2% (-168 thousand 800 persons).
On the other hand, the underemployed population increased in 9.1% (185 thousand 700 persons) compared with the same quarter of the year 2022 and in 28.8% compared with the same quarter of the year 2022 and in 28.8% (498 thousand 300 persons) compared to the same quarter of the year 2019.
More women enter the labor market of Lima Metropolitan area
During the quarter under analysis, the employed female education increased 8.2% (185 thousand 300), meanwhile the male employed population increased 2.7% (73 thousand 600 persons). From the total of the population, 53.6% (2 million 837 thousand 600 persons) are men and 46.4% are women (2 million 453 thousand 700 persons).
Employed population of 45 years of age and over increased 13.3%
According to age groups, a greater increase of employed population of 45 years of age and older, that increased in 13.3% (232 thousand 500), confirming the trend already observed in previous quarters, followed by the population of 25 to 44 years of age that increased by 1.0% (26 thousand 600 persons). Meanwhile, the employed population under 25 years of age did not showed variation.
Employed population with superior education level increase
During the quarter under analysis, the employed population with non-university superior education level increased by 12.8% (133 thousand 200 persons) and those that reached the university education level increased by 6.0% (85 thousand 500 persons). The same behavior was reported between those that have elementary or lower education level in 4.1% (14 thousand 300 persons) and the group with high-school education level in 1.2% (26 thousand persons), compared with the same quarter of the year 2022.
The employed population in the Commerce sector increased by 11.6%
The INEI informed that during the mobile quarter under analysis compared with the same mobile quarter of the year 2022, the employed population in the Commerce sector increased by 11.6% (126 thousand 400 persons), in Services 4.6% (131 thousand 200 persons), Construction in 1.8% (6 thousand 400 persons). Meanwhile, in Manufacturing did not showed variation.
Unemployment rate was of 6.6%
According to the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN) showed that the unemployment rate of Lima Metropolitan area placed in 6.6%, a lower figure in 1.0 percentage point than in the same mobile quarter of the year 2022 (7.6%). Meanwhile, that compared with the same mobile quarter of the year 2019 (6.3%), grew in 0.3 percentage point. It is estimated that 371 thousand persons were looking for a job in Lima Metropolitan area, during the mobile quarter under analysis.
Average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area increased by 7.9%
The INEI informed that the average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area placed in 1,916.20 Soles, amount that compared to the same mobile quarter of the year 2022 meant an increase of 7.9%. Also showed a progress of 8.4% compared with the same mobile quarter of the year 2019.
The average monthly income in the population of 25 to 44 years of age increased by 12.6%
The average monthly income increased in the population of 25 years of age and older. Therefore, it grew in 12.6% (228.60 Soles), between hose that are 25 and 44 years old and in 3.2% (61.30 Soles) in the group of 45 years of age and over. Nevertheless, in the group of 14 to 24 years of age decreased by 3.3% (-39.6 Soles).
