In August of 2023 decreased the flow of the Rimac and Chillon Rivers

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the month of August of 2023 and according to the information provided by the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (SENAMHI), the average flow of the Rimac River reached 15.40 m3/s figure that reflected a reduction of 11.2% and 27.4% compared to the same month of 2022 and to its historic average, respectively.
The technical report Environmental Statistics indicates also that the average flow of the Chillon River reached 1.48 m3/s, a lower result in 9.2% and 12.9% compared to the month of August of 2022 and to its historic average, respectively.
The rivers flow of the center Pacific Ocean watershed decreases
During the eighth month of this year, the rivers flow of the center zone of the Pacific Ocean watershed registered a lower flow. Then, the flow of the Chancay-Huaral River totallized 6.45 m3/s, which represented a decrease of 3.0%, compared to the same month of the last year; nevertheless, it grew 33.0%, compared to its historic average. On the other hand, the flow of Mala River reached 1.62 m3/s, a lower quantity in 5.3% compared to the month of August of 2022 and higher in 15.7% compared to its historic average.
Production of potable water of Lima Metropolitan area increased by 4.1%
During August of 2023 and according to the information of the National Service of Potable Water and Sewerage Service of Lima (SEDAPAL), the production of potable water in Lima Metropolitan area totalized 66 million 389 thousand cubic meters (m3), a result higher in 4.1% compared with the same month of 2022 (63 million 803 thousand cubic meters).
Rainfalls decreased in the north zone of the Pacific Ocean watershed
According to the SENAMHI, during the eighth month of this year, the average rainfalls in the north zone of the Pacific Ocean watershed registered a significant decrease. Then, in the La Cruz station, the average of rainfall reached 0.60 millimeters (mm) lower amount in 33.3% compared with its historic average. In the Ayabaca station (7.30 mm) decreased by 1.4% compared to the same month of the last year; nevertheless, it was higher in 43.1% compared to its historic average.
Meanwhile, in the Llapa station the average of the rainfalls reached 12.20 mm a lower quantity in 44.8% compared to the month of August of 2022 and higher in 56.4% compared to its historic average. In Santa Cruz station (3.90 mm) decreased by 81.5% and 63.6% compared to the month of August of 2022 and to its historic average, respectively.
Puno, Arequipa and Tacna reported low temperatures
During the month of August of 2023 and according to the SENAMHI information, the departments of Puno, Arequipa and Tacna registered the lowest temperatures. The stations with temperatures between -19.8 °C and -10 °C were Mazo Cruz (-19.8 °C), Laraqueri (-15.6 °C), Tisco (-15.5 °C), Pillones (-15.4 °C), Santa Rosa, Cojata and Bocatoma (-15.2 °C in each one), Imata and Desaguadero (-15.0 °C in each one), Pampahuta and Chuquibambilla (-14.0 °C in each one), Pizacoma (-13.8 °C), Las Salinas and Paucarani (-13.2°C in each one), Macusani (-13.0 °C), Santa Lucia (-12.8 °C), Crucero Alto (-12.0 °C), Caylloma (-11.6 °C), Crucero (-11.4 °C), Juliaca (-11.3 °C), Ayaviri and Lampa (-11.0 °C in each one), Pucara and Llally (-10.6 °C in each one), Sibayo (-10.5 °C), Laive (-10.4 °C), Taraco, Porpera and Ananea (-10.0 °C in each one).
Meanwhile, the stations that registered temperatures between -9.8 °C and -2.1 °C were Capachica (-9.8 °C), Salcca (-9.4 °C), Putina (-9.3 °C), Santo Tomas (-8.8 °C), Progreso (-8.6 °C), Huancane (-8.3 °C), Sicuani (-8.0 °C), Ilave (-7.6 °C), Mañazo and Junín (-7.4 °C in each one), Cerro de Pasco and Acostambo (-6.8 °C in each one), Arapa and Azangaro (-6.6 °C in each one), Rincón de la Cruz (-6.4 °C), Pampas (-6.2 °C), Anta Ancachuro (-5.6 °C), Ccatcca (-5.5 °C), La Oroya (-5.4 °C), Ichuña (-5.3 °C), Cabanillas (-5.2 °C), Los Uros and Vilcashuaman (-5.0 °C in each one), Huaraya Moho (-4.8 °C), Pampa de Arrieros (-4.3 °C), Muñani and Pomacanchi (-4.2 °C in each one), Juli (-4.0 °C), Orcopampa and Aymaraes (-3.6 °C in each one), Ingenio (-3.4 °C), Ricran (-3.2 °C), Tahuaco-yunguyo (-3.0 °C), La Victoria (-2.9 °C), Huayao (-2.5 °C), Acopalca (-2.4 °C) and Chivay (-2.1 °C).
Emergencies at national level increased in 172.4%
During the month of August and according to the information of the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI), at national level were registered 542 emergencies, which represented a growth of 172.4% compared to the same month of 2022. The emergencies left 1,387 affected people, 958 affected household, 115 destroyed households and 4,938 hectares of crops destroyed.
The greater quantity of emergencies were reported in the departments of Huancavelica (81), Cajamarca (45), Apurímac (44), Ayacucho (42), Lima (36), Ucayali (33), Cusco (31), Puno (29), Junín and San Martin (24 in each one), Pasco and Piura (20 in each one), Loreto (18), Huánuco and Ancash (17 in each one), Amazonas (13), Arequipa and Ica (8 in each one), Tacna and the Constitutional Province of Callao (6 in each one), Moquegua, La Libertad and Lambayeque (5 in each one), Madre de Dios (3) and Tumbes (2).
The emergencies were caused mainly by urban fires (182), strong winds (116), frosts (77), forest fires (44), temporal (winds with rains) (28), temperature decrease (20), water deficit (15), heavy rains (13), landslide (7), flood by channels over flood, collapsing house and collapse due to antiquity (5 in each one), hills collapse and hailstorm (4 in each one), environmental contamination of water, snowfalls, bank erosion and accident of land transport (2 in each one), cold wave, flood, earthquakes, pests, reptation, electric storm, emission of volcanic ash, flood by over flood in the levee breach and Hydrocarbons Hazardous Waste Management (DNSPP) (1 in each one).
