Five departments concentrated more than the 50% of the potato production achieving a growth of 13.3% in July of 2023

During July of 2023, the potato production increased in the main producer departments such as La Libertad (147.7%), followed by Ica (48.7%), Huancavelica (35.5%), Junín (34.5%) and Huánuco (32.2%), which together contributed with more than 50.0% to the total production of the country. In addition, it grew in Pasco (99.0%), Ayacucho (98.2%) and Piura (68.8%). This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the technical report“Peru: Departmental Economic Outlook”.
Likewise, it informed that the production of this tuber decreased in Lima (-75.7%), Tacna (-54.9%), Cusco (-44.9%), Amazonas (-39.9%), Apurímac (-34.9%), Arequipa (-32.2%), Cajamarca (-16.3%) and Ancash (-12.7%).
At national level, the potato production totalized 292 thousand 676 tons and showed an increase of y 13.3% compared to July of the last year (258 thousand 430 tons), driven by the greater harvested areas as a result of the good weather conditions for the growth of plantations and regular plant development of this crop.
Piura, Amazonas and San Martín contributed with the 83.2% in the national production of paddy rice
The paddy rice production, which is destined to domestic market, decreased in the main producing area of the North Coast which is Piura (-17.6%), followed by Amazonas (-23.3%) and San Martín (-4.8%); in spite of this, these three departments contributed with the 83.2% of the total produced. Nevertheless, in the departments of Ucayali (114.8%), Pasco (22.1%) and Huánuco (12.9%) increased.
The paddy rice production, across the country, totalized 268 thousand 123 tons, lower volume in 22.0% compared to the obtained in the same month of the last year. This negative behavior was due to the reduction of the harvested area, influenced by the adverse weather conditions that affected the maturation phase and caused phytosanitary problems in the crop.
Poultry production was affected in 22 departments
The INEI informed that the poultry production registered a decrease in 22 departments, mainly in Arequipa (-6.4%) and La Libertad (-3.1%); nevertheless, these two regions concentrated more than 25.0% of the total produced. On the other hand, the poultry production just increased in the departments of Ica (1.5%) and Lima (0.8%), registering a participation of 5.4% and 55.4%, respectively, of the total poultry production.
At national level, the poultry production contracted by 1.2% compared to the same month of 2022, as a consequence of the lower placement of BB chicken in the meat line, before the high costs of food supply, basically of soy and corn.
Six departments concentrated 72.0% of the copper production
During July of 2023, outstood the copper production obtained in the departments of Moquegua (168.8%), Ica (38.2%) and Cusco (32.0%), by growing above the national average (18.1%). In addition, it increased in Arequipa (14.0%), Tacna (10.3%) and Apurímac (0.4%), together representing the 72.0% of the national copper production. Nevertheless, in Junín (-36.0%), Cajamarca (-15.0%), Ayacucho (-2.4%), Lima (-1.7%) and Ancash (-1.6%) decreased.
The copper production, across the country, increased by 18.1% compared to the same month of the last year, determined by the extraction levels performed by the company Anglo American Quellaveco. To all this was added the superior volumes obtained from the companies Cerro Verde, Marcobre, Hudbay Perú, Sociedad Minera El Brocal and Minera Antapaccay.
Six departments contributed with the 75.1% of the total production of electricity
At departmental level, the electricity production grew in Arequipa (170.3%) and Moquegua (140.8%), followed by Ica (14.8%), Piura (13.8%), Cusco (8.9%) and Lima (4.8%), concentrating the 75.1% of the total generated. While, in Huánuco (-48.0%), Apurímac (-36.6%), San Martín (-35.9%), Tacna (-35.3%) and Puno (-32.4%) among others decreased.
At national level, the production of electric energy increased by 2.3% based on the greater generation of energy of thermic origin of the power stations Kallpa, Santa Rosa, Chilca II, Santa Rosa II, Malacas II and Aguaytía. In addition, it contributed the greater non-conventional renewable power generation (Eolic and solar). Meanwhile, it was affected by the low production of hydraulic energy in the power station of Mantaro, Restitución, Cerro del Águila, Charcani V, Huinco, Matucana, Yaupi y Yuncán, among others.
Revenues collected by internal taxes increased by 2.4%
The INEI informed that the revenues collected by internal taxes, during July of 2023, reached 9 thousand 651 million 909 thousand Soles, 2.4% higher than the amount registered in the same month of the las year amount (9 thousand 424 million 625 Soles). This favorable result was influenced by the increase of the value added tax by own account and non-domiciled; as well as the selective excise tax of fuels, mainly.
Of the 16 departments that registered a positive performance, outstood Arequipa (27.6%), La Libertad (7.8%) and Lima (2.0%), which contributed with 91.7% of the total collected. Nevertheless, the collection in Cusco (-38.0%), Ucayali (-19.0%), San Martín (-13.5%) and Piura (-8.5%) among others decreased.
