63.2% of the complaints of Human Trafficking is for sexual exploitation

In the National Day against of Human Trafficking, that is celebrated today 23 September, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that according to data provided by the Ministry of the Interior (MININTER), during the year 2022, the National Police of Peru (PNP) reported a total of 631 complaints of human trafficking across the country. According to the exploitation types, that suffers the victims of human trafficking; the most common were the sexual exploitation (63.2%), followed by labor exploitation (30.7%). During the first semester of 2023, the PNP reported 197 complaints for this crime.
Human trafficking is considered in our country a crime that affects mainly to the most vulnerable individuals; this includes women, boys, girls and adolescents. It is important to mention that this crime is linked to multiple risk factors, such as the poverty, the inequality and the lack of opportunities, the gender discrimination, the lack of identity documents and the limited education, among others.
Lima has the greater number of complaints
From the total of complaints registered in the year 2022, Lima was the department with the greater number of complaints (390), followed by Lambayeque (49), Cusco (36), Arequipa and Huánuco (32 each one).
Nine out of ten victims of human trafficking were abducted with job offer.
According to the complaints registered by the PNP, in the year 2022, 464 (93.9%) victims of human trafficking were abducted by job offer mode and 23 (4.7%) by Internet, among others.
Nine out of ten alleged victims of human trafficking are women
In the year 2022, of the total alleged victims of human trafficking reported by the PNP, 538 were women (85.3%) and 93 men (14.7%).
By age group, in the case of women, 197 were under 18 years old, 273 were between 18-29 years old and 67 were between 30 to 59 years old. Among the male, 26 were under 66 years old and 2 were between 18 to 59 years old.
86.5% of the alleged victims of human trafficking have high-school education level.
According to education level reached by the alleged victims of human trafficking, 63 (10.0%) have elementary education level, 546 (86.5%) have a high-school education level and 3 (0.5%) superior education level, while other 19 did not specified.
58.3% of the prison population for the crime of human trafficking is male
Regarding the prison population by the crime of human trafficking (451), 58.3% are male and 41.7% are female, according to the information of the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE), as of December of 2022.
Likewise, of the persons imprisoned by the crime of human trafficking, the majority are between 30 to 44 years old (53.7%). In addition, according to legal status, 179 were processed and 272 were sentenced. The three penal institutions (E.P.) with more prisoners by the crime of human trafficking are in the E.P. of Juliaca (30), the E.P. of Puerto Maldonado (27) and the E.P. of Ica (26).
