Differentiated evolution in the departmental productive activity in the Second quarter of 2023

During the second quarter of this year, the economy of 11 departments of the country increased; meanwhile 13 departments showed an unfavorable behavior; this was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the technical report Indicator of Departmental Productive Activity.
The positive evolution was led by Moquegua (49.2%) and Apurimac (42.9%), explained by the mining and commerce activities. Also, grew Huánuco (5.4%), Amazonas (2.5%), Cusco (2.0%), Loreto (1.9%), San Martín (1.8%), Piura (1.2%), Pasco (1.0%), Arequipa (0.4%) and Madre de Dios (0.2%).
Meanwhile, among the departments that contributed in the negative result of the national production are Puno (-13.4%) influenced by the agricultural, transportation and telecommunications sectors; Tumbes (-9.2%), Lambayeque (-5.3%) and Tacna (-2.7%) due to the construction, agricultural and manufacturing activities; Ancash (-4.0%) and Lima (-2.0%) due to manufacturing, fishing and telecommunications sectors; likewise, La Libertad (-3.2%) and Cajamarca (-2.5%) based in the agricultural and mining activities.
Productive activity in Puno decreased by 13.4% influenced by the Agricultural sector
The production of the Department of Puno reduced by 13.4% due to the droughts and social conflicts. The Agricultural sector was affected by the agricultural subsector before the lower potato crop due to the frosts and lack of rainfall; alfalfa, quinoa and barley as grains; nevertheless it increased the crop of yucca, banana and avocado. Meanwhile, the livestock sector increased due to the greater production of beef cattle, alpaca and llama, of which is the first producer at national level. Regarding the Telecommunications sector contracted based in the low demand of postpaid mobile phone services and pay television.
The economy in Tumbes reduced by 9.2% determined by the Construction sector
The productive activity of the Department of Tumbes decreased by 9.2% before the heavy rains in the north of the country, which influenced in the fall of Construction sector, impacting in the investment of the National Government in works of educational infrastructure; and Local Government in road infrastructure.
Likewise, the Agricultural sector contracted explained by the lower production of banana (adverse weather conditions), paddy rice, cacao, yucca, beef cattle, swine, poultry and eggs; meanwhile, it increased the crops of lemon and hard yellow corn.
The Construction sector caused the decrease of the economy of Lambayeque by 5.3%
The productive level of the department of Lambayeque decreased by 5.3% influenced by the heavy rain fallen that caused the fall of Construction sector reflected in the lower physical progress of the rehabilitation Works of the zones affected by The Coastal El Niño phenomenon; as well as the Local Governments and Regional Government in educational infrastructure. Likewise, the Telecommunications sector decreased due to the reduction of television services by subscription and postpaid cell phone.
Production performance of Ancash decreased by 4.0% explained by fishing sector
The economy of the department of Ancash contracted by 4.0% based on the Fishing sector due to the low extraction of anchovy for industrial use in Chimbote and Coishco ports, as well as the null capture of this species in the Samanco port and also before the cancellation of the 2023 first fishing season in the north-center zone of the Peruvian coast. In addition, the landing of marine species intended to be canned in Chimbote port fell. Also, in Telecommunications sector fell the number of subscriptions to pay television and of postpaid cellphone lines.
Lower manufacturing activity influenced in the production of La Libertad that decreased by 3.2%
The economy of the department of La Libertad reduced by 3.2% due to Manufacturing sector associated to the lower preparation of fishmeal and fish oil in Chicama port that was influenced by the changes of the temperature in the sea that affected the extraction of species that are used as input in this industry. In addition, the manufacture of non-metallic mining products, meat processing and sugar processing.
Likewise, the Agriculturalsector contracted due to the lower production of paddy rice before the adverse weather conditions due to the presence of The Coastal El Niño phenomenon the followed by the potato, starchy staple and corn. Nevertheless, the crops destined for foreign market increased and the agribusiness such as the avocado, asparagus, sugar cane and blueberries, from which them is the first producer in the country.
The contraction of the Agricultural sector affected the economy of Cajamarca by 2.5%
The productive activity of the department of Cajamarca decreased by 2.5% influenced the Agriculturalsector based in the lower production of crops oriented to the internal market, as well as the paddy rice, potato, starchy maize and corn and dry bean. Nevertheless, those destined to the foreign market and agroindustry grew, such as the coffee (third producer at national level and avocado. The livestock subsector decreased all the products impacting the beef cattle and the fresh milk.
Meanwhile, the reduction of mining activity was due to the lower extraction of gold in the mining companies Coimolache, Gold Fields La Cima, Yanacocha and La Zanja; also, decreased the volumes obtained of copper and silver.
Lower manufacturing activity affected the economy of Lima by decreasing in 2.0%
The production of the department of Lima reduced by 2.0% due to the Manufacturing sector that reported a lower processing of fishmeal and fish oil, cement manufacture and preparation of clothing items. In the Construction sector decreased, the private investment in multi-family households, offices and shopping centers, in addition of the self-construction works; nevertheless, it continued the physical progress of public works such as works in the construction of the line 2 and the branch Avenue Faucett-Gambetta of the basic network of the Metro of Lima and Callao.
Production performance of Moquegua grew 49.2% driven by the mining activity
The economy of the department of Moquegua expanded by 49.2% influenced by the mining subsector due to the greater copper and molybdenum extraction reported in the company Southern Perú Copper Corporation (Cuajone mine), helped by the significant contribution of the company Anglo American Quellaveco. The increase of manufacturing sector was determined by the industry of precious metals and non-ferrous metals (gold and silver refining and copper byproducts); in addition to the processing and preservation of meats.
Mining activity influenced in the development of the economy of Apurímac by 42.9%
The production of the department of Apurímac increased by 42.9% based on the favorable performance of the mining activity due to the greater volumes of extracted copper and molybdenum in the Mining Las Bambas. This was based on the base effect as a result of the stoppage of its operations between April 20 and June 10 of 2022 before the social conflicts that happened in the surrounding peasant communities.
