Vehicular traffic at national level increased 1.9% in May of 2023

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the month of May of 2023, the National Rate of Vehicular Flow that registers the traffic flow of light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles through the tollbooths across the country increased by 1.9% compared with the same month of the last year, influenced by the greater traffic of light (3.4%) and heavy (0.3%) duty vehicles.
In the technical report Traffic Flow through Toll Booths that details that during the last twelve months (June 2022 – May 2023), this indicator increased by 4.1%.
Traffic flow of light duty vehicles increased 3.4%
During the month under analysis, the movement of light duty vehicles registered by the tollbooths of the country grew by 3.4% compared to the same month of 2022, driven by the greater movement of people and vehicles on the occasion of the Labor Day and Mother’s Day, which favored the development of the Commerce, Transportation and Tourism sectors.
The tollbooths that reported the greater traffic flow were, to the north in San Martín (Moyobamba 62.7%) and Piura (Paita 4.7%), likewise, in the south, in Ica (Marcona 12.2%) and Arequipa (Matarani-Concesión 7.0% and Uchumayo-Concesion 5.7%); while in the center, it decreased in Lima (Fortaleza -19.3%, Corcona -7.9%, El Paraíso -7.4%, Variant of Pasamayo -7.4% and Serpentine of Pasamayo -2.9%) and Junín (Casaracra -9.0% and Quiulla -1.6%).
Traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles registered a slight increase of 0.3%
During May of this year, the traffic flow of units reported through the toll booths of the country increased by 0.3%, compared to the same month of 2022. This result was influenced mainly due to the greater demand of this type of vehicles for the movement of products related with the Commerce and Mining activities; mitigated by the lower requirement of cargo transportation service of Agricultural, Manufacturing and Construction sectors.
The tollbooths with greater traffic flow were, to the north, San Martin (Moyobamba 14.1% and Pongo 8.8%) and Piura (Paita 12.5% and Piura-Sullana 1.5%) and in the south, Moquegua (Ilo 41.1%), Arequipa (Matarani-Concesión 16.9% and Uchumayo-Concesión 2.6%) and Ica (Marcona 15.9%). On the other hand, it decreased in the center in Lima (El Paraíso -10.6%, Fortaleza -9.3%, Serpentine of Pasamayo -8.0%, Corcona -4.6% and Variant of Pasamayo -4.3%) and Junin (Casaracra -7.1% and Quiulla -1.1%).
Traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles of 3 to 7 axle grew 1.7%
During the month of May of 2023, the traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles of 3 to 7 axle increased by 1.7% compared to the same month of 2022, due to the greater traffic flow of vehicles such as trailers, semi-trailers and cargo trucks of 3 axle (0.4%), 4 axle (1.2%), 5 axle (1.7%), 6 axle (2.6%) and 7 axle (5.8%).
