Employed population reached 5 million 215 thousand 500 persons in Lima Metropolitan area in the II quarter of 2023

In the second quarter of this year, the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 215 thousand 500 persons and increased by 2.5% (127 thousand 800 persons) compared with the same quarter of the year 2022. Compared with the same quarter of the year 2019, increased by 6.5% (318 thousand 500 persons). This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) through the technical report Situation of the Labor Market in Lima Metropolitan area, prepared with the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN).
The population with suitable employment increased by 5.5% (156 thousand persons) compared to the same quarter of the year 2022, while it decreased in 4.7% (-149 thousand 300 persons) compared with the same quarter of the year 2019. Meanwhile, the underemployed population reduced by 1.3% (-28 thousand 100 persons) compared with the same quarter of 2022. Nevertheless, it grew by 26.8% (467 thousand 800 persons) compared to the same quarter of 2019.
Female employed population increased by 4.3%
In the quarter under analysis, the female employed population increased by 4.3% (99 thousand 400 persons); while the male employed population increased by 1.0% (28 thousand 600 persons). From the total of employed population of Lima Metropolitan area, 53.7% (2 million 800 thousand 200) are men and 46.3% (2 million 415 thousand 400) are women.
Employed population aged 45 years old and over grew by 10.0%
By age groups, the employment increased in greater proportion in the population aged 45 years old and older, which grew by 10.0% (172 thousand 700 persons), followed by the population of 25 to 44 years old in 1.5% (37 thousand 600 persons); while it decreased the employed population under 25 years old in 10.2% (-82 thousand 500 persons).
Employed population with non-university superior education level increased by 27.4%
During the quarter under analysis, the employed population with non-university superior education level grew by 27.4% (242 thousand 800 persons), compared with the same quarter of the year 2022, and the population with the university education grew by 19.6% (240 thousand 300 persons). Meanwhile, the population with high-school education level decreased by 13.6% (-347 thousand 200 persons) and that population with elementary education level or lower level decreased by 1.9% (-8 thousand persons).
Employed population in Services sector increased by 7.6%
The employed population in the Services sector increased by 7.6% (209 thousand persons), followed by Manufacturing in 4.7% (31 thousand 800 persons); while it decreased by 12.8% (-54 thousand 800 persons) in Construction and in 4.8% (-55 thousand 600 persons) in commerce sector.
The unemployment rate was of 6.6%
During the quarter April-May-June 2023, the unemployment rate of Lima Metropolitan area was of 6.6%, being 0.2 percentage point lower than in the same quarter of the year 2022 (6.8%). It is estimated that 365 thousand 700 persons look for a job in Lima Metropolitan area.
The average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area grew by 15.4%
During the second quarter of 2023, the average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area placed in 1 924.7 Soles, and increased by 15.4% compared with the same quarter of the year 2022 and by 13.1% (222.9 Soles) compared with the same period of the year 2019.
