Peruvian population reached 33 million 726 thousand persons in the year 2023

In 2023, the country’s population reached 33 million 726 thousand inhabitants and it is estimated that in the next 27 years, it means, at year 2050, it will reach a population of 39 million 363 thousand persons. This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), on the occasion of the World Population Day, which is celebrated the July 11, through the document Situation of the Peruvian Population as of 2023. A glance on young people. 
 
According to the estimations and projections, the 82.6% of the population reside in the urban area (27 million 848 thousand persons). Likewise, the Peruvian population is comprised by 16 million 727 thousand men (49.6%) and 16 million 999 thousand (50.4 %) women. On the other hand, 59.0% of the population live in the Coast of our country (19 million 194 thousand inhabitants), followed by 26.8% (9 million 27 thousand inhabitants) in the Highlands and the 14.2% in the natural region of the Jungle (4 million 785 thousand inhabitants).
 
Age average of the population is 33.6 years old
The average age of the Peruvian population had been remained the same for five decades between 23 and 24 years old. Since the year 1993, started to increase (28.9 years old) till it placed in 33.6 years old in the year 2023, which is proof of the ageing process which the country will go through. 
 
Lima Metropolitan area and Piura are the most populous ones
According to the concentration grade of the population, 10 million 151 thousand persons live in Lima Metropolitan area (30.1%), population greater in 4.7 times than that of Piura, department considered the second most populous (2 million 127 thousand inhabitants), followed by the departments of La Libertad, Arequipa, Cajamarca, Cusco, Junín and Lambayeque.
 
26 cities have more than 100 thousand inhabitants
For the year 2023, it is estimated that 26 cities have more than 100 thousand inhabitants and four cities would exceed the million, is the case of Lima, Callao, Arequipa and Trujillo. The process of urbanization introduced changes in both growth, density and distribution of the population, as far as it concerns to the physical expansion and spatial behavior of the cities.
 
Population density reached to 26 persons by square kilometer
Considered as an indicator that measures the concentration of the population, population density, had increased over the years, mainly by the demographic growth and y the urbanization process. For the year 2023, the population density is of 26 persons by square kilometer; while, according to the 1940 Census, the density was of 5.5 inhabitants by square kilometer.
 
Young population aged 15 to 29 years old reached 7 million 867 thousand persons
During the year 2023, the young population aged 15 to 29 years old reached 7 million 867 thousand young people, population group that represent the 23.3% of the Peruvian population. According to sex, 4 million 53 thousand (51.5%) are women and 3 million 814 thousand (48.5%) men.  
 
From the total of young people aged 15 to 29 years old, 48.6% just work and the 10.5% study and work
The results of the National Household Survey (ENAHO 2022) informed that from the total young people aged 15 to 29 years old, 48.6% just work; 22.7% just study; just study; 10.5% study and work and a 18.2% do not study nor work, this last group is composed both on young unemployed people and on inactive young people.
 
55.8% of the population aged 15 to 29 years old were self-identify as mestizo in the year 2022
The distribution of the young people according to ethnic self-perception reveals that the 55.8% self-identify as mestizo, the 23.3% as Andean people (Quechua/Aymara/native or indigenous of the de la Amazonia / belonging or part of other indigenous or original people), the 7.0% afro-descendants y el 4.9% white. According to sex, the 56.2% of men self-identify as mestizo; meanwhile that the 55.4% women self-identify as mestizo. Likewise, 24.0% of women self-identify as Andean people and in the case of men the 22.6%.
 
57.3% of the young population studied some year of high-school education
In the year 2022, 57.3% of the population, aged 15 to 29 years old studied some year of high-school education, the 36.8% university education and just the 5.9% of this population group did not reach to study some level of education or reached to study some grade or year of elementary school. 
According to sex, the level of education reached in high-school education, was greater in men (59.8%) than in women (54.7%). Among those that reached some year of superior education outstood women (39.2%), against men (34.5%).    
     
Engineering among the main professions that young people study
In the year 2022, the university superior career that study or studied the Young population includes Engineering (25.6%), Business Administration (13.0%), Psychology (10.3%), as well as Economic and Social Sciences (10.0%), among the main ones.
 
91.1% of the Young population use the Internet 
During the last years, the use of the Internet had increased in the population aged 15 years old and over. The greater percentage was registered among the young population (91.1%), than among the adults aged 30 years old and over (65.7%), in 2022, registering increases of 34.6 percentage points, and in adults 45.2 percentage points, respectively compared with the year 2010.
 
Main problems of the country that concerns the young population
58.5% of the young population mentioned the corruption as the main problem that affects the country, the delinquency was mentioned by the 35.8% and the low wages /increase of prices was perceived by the 27.2%.
