39.6% of the country’s households have among their members a 60 year old or older adult in the first quarter of 2023

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that for the first quarter of 2023, 39.6% of the households of the country have between their members at least a person aged 60 years old and older.
Through the technical report Situation of Older Adult Population, prepared with the results of the National Household Survey, the INEI stated that in the rural area the proportion of households with some member of that age range reached 42.7%, followed by Lima Metropolitan area (41.7%) and the households of the rest of urban area (36.8%).
From the total of households of the country, 25.9% have as female or male chief an older adult
At national level, from the total of households, 25.9% have as female or male chief a person aged 60 years old and older. According to sex, from the total of female-headed households, 28.9% are older adults and in the case of male-headed households, 24.3% fulfill that condition.
In rural area, 42.8% of households led by female older adults, a higher figure in 18.3 percentage points compared to the reported by men (24.5%). In urban area, women older adult head of household represent 26.4% and men 24.2%.
89.8% of the older adult population have some health insurance
From the total of the older adult population aged 60 years old and older, 89.8% have some health insurance, being public or private, registering an increase of 1.4 percentage points, more than in the first quarter of the year 2022 (88.4%).
The affiliation coverage to some health insurance of the residents of the rural area was of 91.1%, followed by those that live in the rest of the urban area (90.6%) and Lima Metropolitan area (88.1%).
By type of health insurance, 47.6% of the population age 60 years old and older accessed to the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS), 36.6% to the Social Health Insurance (EsSalud) and 5.6% to other type of insurance.
From the total of the population, that suffers some disability the 41.9% are persons aged 60 years old and older
In the first quarter of this year, from the total of the population that suffers some disability the 41.9% are older adults, it means that they are 60 years old and older.
According to sex, of women and men that suffers some disability, 47.4% and 36.9% are 60 years old and older, respectively. This shows a difference of 10.5 percentage points between both sexes, where older adult women is the one who suffer most of some type of disability.
By residence area, the proportion of older adult population with some disability is higher in the rural area (43.0%) than in the urban area (41.5%). Among the older adults that have some disability, 12.2% are between 60 to 70 years old and 29.6% are 71 years old and older.
By type of disability, in that population group, 31.8% have difficulty to use arms and legs, 14.6% have difficulty to hear, 11.2% have difficulty to see and 6.9% to understand or learn, among the main ones. Likewise, 34.0% of older adults that have some disability have two or more disabilities.
