V CENEC 2022 revealed that there are more than 2 million 367 thousand establishments and premises destined for some productive activity

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) released the results of the National Census of Establishments, first phase of the V National Economic Census (V CENEC 2022), indicating that there are 2 million 367 thousand 085 establishments in the country. Of these establishments, on the 80.2% (1 million 897 thousand 539) were operating during the registering period and the 19.8% (469 thousand 546) were premises intended destined for the development of some economic activity, that in the period of census route there temporarily or definitively closed, were closed, were rented they were selling, were in maintenance or unoccupied.
Compared to the number of establishments registered in 2008 VI National Economic Census (940 thousand 336), an increase of 860 thousand establishments was observed.
The results were presented by the Chief of the INEI, Dante Carhuavilca Bonett, who was accompanied by the General Director of Macroeconomic Policies of the Ministry of Economy and Finance - MEF, José Bustamante Solis, the president of Maximixe, Jorge Chávez Álvarez and the president of the National Society of Indutries (SIN), Jesús Salazar Nishi.
43% of the premises destined for some economic activity are temporarily closed
Of the total non-operating premises registered in the V CENEC, 43.4% were temporarily closed, 24.2% were unoccupied, 12.3% were permanently closed, 11.3% were rented, 3.3% are warehouses/deposits registered, 1.3% in maintenance, remodeling, 0.3% in sale and 3.9% in another condition.
94.9% of operating establishments are privately managed
According to the type of management of establishments located in the urban area, 94.9% (1 million799 thousand 829) are privately managed and 5.1% (97 thousand 710) are for public management activities.
According to the National Establishments Census, 62.4% of establishments are destined for commercial activity
According to large economic activities, 62.4% of privately managed establishments are dedicated to Commerce, 26.6% to Services, 7.5% Manufacturing, 0.2% to other activities.
In Lima Metropolitan area, the districts of La Victoria, Lima and San Juan de Lurigancho concentrate the greatest number of establishments dedicated to the Manufacture
The V CENEC revealed that, in Metropolitan Lima, the districts with the greatest number of manufacturing establishments are La Victoria, Lima and San Juan de Lurigancho, in which between 5 thousand and 10 thousand establishments are counted; they are followed by the districts of San Martín de Porres and Ate, which have between 3 thousand and 5 thousand establishments.
71.4% of establishments are not concentrated
According to the physical concentration of the establishments, 71.4% are not concentrated, that is, they are located outside galleries, markets or shopping centers. Meanwhile, 28.6% are concentrated, of which 54.2% are located in markets, 34.8% in galleries and 11.0% in another type of building.

81.7% of privately managed establishments are unique category
According to the category of the establishment registered by the National Census of Establishments, 81.7% are unique, that is, they do not depend on another main establishment. 7.4% are branches, i.e. they depend on a head office or main establishment. 5.4% are main, one or more establishments depend on them. 2.4% are ancillary sites.
62.9% of privately managed establishments started their activities before 2020
The results of the V CENEC showed that 62.9% of privately managed establishments began their activities before 2020 while 37.1% did so between 2020 and 2022.
Women manage most establishments created in the last three years
In the last three years, 608 thousand 848 establishments were created, of which 62.8% are driven by women, a situation that is repeated in all departments of the country; while, the proportion of establishments led by men represented 37.2%.
12% of privately owned establishments operated throughout 2020
According to the operating situation, it is observed that of the private management establishments that operated all year, 90% did so in 2019, only 12.0% in 2020 and 46.4% in 2021. These results show the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the recovery of the economy in 2021.
At the departmental level, Lima Metropolitan area registered the highest number of establishments and premises registered destined for productive productivity activity
According to the National Census of Establishments, the greatest number of establishments and premises registered were found in the Lima Metropolitan area with 792 thousand 919, followed by Arequipa (170 thousand 161), La Libertad (139 thousand 397), Junín (113 thousand 449) and Cusco (111 thousand 679). Of these departments, it is observed that in Lima Metropolitan area 80.9% of private and public establishments were operational, in La Libertad this proportion represented 80.2%, Junín 77.5%, Cusco 78.6% and in Arequipa 66.8%.
Meanwhile, the departments with the least number establishment and premises registered were Pasco (18 thousand 613), Huancavelica (18 thousand 397), Madre de Dios (17 thousand 936) and Tumbes (17 thousand 386); of which, the proportion of those that were operational represented 78.0% in Pasco, 82.4% in Huancavelica, 87.4% in Madre de Dios and 85.1% in Tumbes.
In Lima Metropolitan area the number of establishments grew in 82.3%
When comparing the number of establishments registered in Lima Metropolitan area in the IV CENEC with those of the V CENEC, an increase of 82.3% was observed when it went from 342 thousand 374 in 2008 to 624 thousand 27 in 2022.
At departmental level, it can be seen that Madre de Dios reported an increase of 201.0% by going from 4 thousand 983 to 14 thousand 997 establishments. Meanwhile, 11 departments had growth between 101% and 150% and 14 departments between 51% and 100%.
By province, it was noted that in 54 of them the proportion of establishments registered increased between 910.0% and 201.0%; 119 with percentages from 200.0% to 101.0%, 19 provinces between 100.0% and 50.0% and one recorded a growth of 49.3%.
25.8% of Lima’s establishments are concentrated near Plaza de Armas
Depending on the degree of concentration of the establishments near Plaza de Armas in the city, it was noted that 25.8% (174 thousand 753) of the establishments in Lima are located within a 5 km radius of Plaza de Armas. In the case of Chiclayo, this proportion represented 58.8%; in Cusco 39.0%, in Arequipa 54.9%, Trujillo 51.1% and in Huancayo, 46.2% is concentrated within a 5 km radius of the Plaza de la Constitución.
