Vehicular traffic at national level increased by 2.1% in April of 2023

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that in the month of April of 2023, the National Rate of Vehicular Flow that registers the traffic flow of light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles through the tollbooths across the country increased by 2.1% compared with the same month of the last year. This situation was determined by the greater traffic flow of light duty vehicles (6.5%), result that was attenuated by the lower traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles (-3.2%).
In the technical report Traffic Flow through Toll Booths that details that during the last twelve months (May 2022 – April 2023), this indicator showed a progress of 4.4%.
Traffic flow of light-duty vehicles increased by 6.5%
In April of this year, the traffic flow of light-duty vehicles reported through the tollbooths of the country increased by 6.5% compared to the same month of 2022. This favorable performance was influenced by the greater traffic of persons and vehicles, mainly by the celebrations of Holy Week in different regions of the country that contributed to the dynamism of the Commerce, Tourism and Transportation; as well as the return to in-person classes in public and private educational institutions and the return to job sites.
The toll booths with greater traffic flow were: to the north, in San Martín (Moyobamba 161.8% and Pongo 0.9%), La Libertad (Virú 4.2%); in the south, Arequipa (Matarani-Concesión 58.3% and Uchumayo-Concesión 15.9%), Ica (Marcona 18.8% and Jahuay Chincha 5.9%) and Moquegua (Ilo 4.5%); and in the center, in Junín (Quiulla 54.1% and Casaracra 28.9%) and Lima (Serpentine of Pasamayo 14.2%, El Paraíso 1.3% and Variant of Pasamayo 0.2%).
Traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles decreased by 3.2%
During the fourth month of 2023, the traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles registered through the tollbooths at national level, presented a reduction of 3.2% compared with the same month of the last year. This was due to the low demand of the service for transportation of products related to Agricultural, Manufacturing and Construction sectors that their activities were basically affected in the north region of our country, because of the climate changes that caused heavy rains, huaicos and floods.
The toll booths with a lower traffic flow were: to the north, Piura (Loma Larga Baja -82.8% and Piura Sullana -1.4%), La Libertad (Virú -7.4%, Chicama -7.2% and Pacanguilla -6.6%), Cajamarca (Pomahuaca-Pucara -2.8%), San Martín (Aguas Claras -1.8%) and Áncash (Huarmey -1.8%). In the south, Moquegua (Pampa Cuéllar -22.5%), Arequipa (Patahuasi -6.0% and Uchumayo-Concesión -0.3%) and Apurímac (Pichirhua -1.1%); and in the center, Lima (Serpentine of Pasamayo -3.1%, Fortaleza -2.0%, El Paraíso -1.5%, Variant of Pasamayo -1.2% and Corcona -0.3%).
Traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicle of 3 to 7 axle contracted by 1.9%
During April of the current year, the traffic flow of heavy-duty of 3 to 7 axle showed a decrease of 1.9%, compared to the same month of 2022, explained by the lower traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles such as trailers, semi-trailers and drayage trucks of 3 axle (-0.5%), 5 axle (-2.9%), 6 axle (-3.0%) and 7 axle (-3.7%). Nevertheless, the traffic flow of 4 axle (0.4%) vehicles increased.
