INEI presents for the first time information of the labor market at city level

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) presented through the document Peru: Indicators of the Labor Market at departmental level and of main cities 2022, the main results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN-2022). This document is the main information source about the labor market with a sample of 132 thousand 704 private household, that allows to have specialized data at national, departmental and main cities level.
EPEN will provide information of the labor market at cities level
The INEI emphasized that the EPEN will allow to provide the country of statistical information about Peruvian labor market at the level of main cities in a periodic way. The survey is designed to offer the country in the short term the monthly, quarterly and annual data of the workforce, employment and unemployment, among other variables.
It should be noted that with this publication the recommendations of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) are being complying, about to expand the coverage of surveys of the active population of short term at sub-national level, which allows a better knowledge of the national reality of the labor market.
For the implementation of the EPEN, the Mapping and the Registration of Households and Establishments in the 24 departments of the country and in the Constitutional Province of Callao. This task had as main goal to obtain basic information for the household selection, applying the EPEN digital questionnaire.
Likewise, the EPEN, being a specialized survey of the labor market, have rotating modules that are executed periodically. Therefore, during the 3rd quarter of the year 2021, performed the Module about Job Training and Training for Employment. During the first quarter of 2022, the Health and Safety Module at Work. During the second quarter of 2022, the Displacement Module to the Work Place and in the third quarter about the use of Time.
The main cities that are part of this study are Abancay, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Chachapoyas, Chiclayo, Chimbote, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huancayo, Huánuco, Huaraz, Ica, Iquitos, Lima Metropolitan area and the Constitutional Province of Callao, Moquegua, Moyobamba, Pasco, Piura, Pucallpa, Puerto Maldonado, Puno, Tacna, Tarapoto, Trujillo and Tumbes. In addittion, it is expected that from the third quarter of this year, data be collected from the city of Juliaca (Puno).
71.4% of the working-age population participates in the labor market
According to the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN), in 2022, 71.4% of the Working Age Population (WAP) will actively participates in the labor market, being in condition of employed or looking for employment.
The activity rate of the working-age population is an indicator that reflects the magnitude of the available labor force in the production of goods and services, compared to the population in working-age.
The activity rate of the working age population surpasses the national average (71.4%) in 18 departments, outstanding the departments of Huancavelica (83.5%), Apurímac (80.5%), Puno (80.3%), Ayacucho (79.3%), Cajamarca (78.7%), with the highest participation.
By main cities, the activity rate of the working-age population placed in 66.6%, being lower in 4.8 percentage points than the national average (71.4%). The city of Moyobamba presents the highest WAP activity rate with 74.6%, followed by the city of Puerto Maldonado (73.6%), Iquitos (72.5%), Ayacucho (71.2%), Piura (70.8%), Abancay (70.4%), among the main ones. Meanwhile, the cities of Tacna (65.3%), Huánuco (65.3%), Chimbote (63.9%), Huaraz (63.8%) and Arequipa (60.8%), present the lowest rates.
In the country there are 17 million 336 thousand 500 employed persons
During the year 2022, the employed population of the country reached 17 million 336 thousand 500 persons. From this total, 13 million 793 thousand 700 persons (79.6%), are in the urban area and 3 million 542 thousand 800 (20.4%) in the rural area.
According to sex, the male employed population reached 9 million 626 thousand (55.5%) and the female employed population reached 7 million 710 thousand 500 (44.5%).
29.0% of the employed population is concentrated in Lima Metropolitan area and in the Constitutional province of Callao
From the total of the employed EAP, in Lima Metropolitan area and Constitutional Province of Callao are concentrated 29.0% of the employed population of the country (5 million 19 thousand 400 persons); followed by the departments of Piura with 1 million 171 thousand 600 persons (6.8%). La Libertad 1 million 98 thousand 800 persons (6.3%) and the Lima region (that comprises the provinces of Barranca, Cajatambo, Canta, Cañete, Huaral, Huarochirí, Huaura, Oyón and Yauyos) with 1 million 30 thousand 100 persons (5.9%), among the main ones.
48.0% of the employed population is between 25 to 44 years old
According to age groups, 16.1% from the total employed population is between 14 to 24 years old, 48.0%, is between 25 to 44 years old and 35.9% is 45 years old and older.
At level of departments, from the total employed population, more than 20% are Young people between 14 to 24 years old. Among the departments with employed population in this age range, Huancavelica (24.4%), Amazonas (21.7%), Loreto (21.0%), Huánuco (21.0%), Ayacucho (20.2%) and San Martin (20.1%). Meanwhile, the departments of Moquegua (8.6%), Tacna (10.0%), Arequipa (11.4%) and Lima region (11.9%), have lower proportion of young employed EAP.
On the other hand, in Lima Metropolitan area and Constitutional Province of Callao (50.3%) and in Madre de Dios (50.0%), a greater participation in the employment of the population between 25 to 44 years old, was registered. Meanwhile, the population aged 45 years old and over in Moquegua (46.0%), Tacna (43.5%), Lima region (43.0%), Tumbes (41.1%) and Arequipa (40.3%), registers the greater proportion.
Unemployment rate at national level was of 4.7%
The unemployment rate placed in 4.7% at national level. In urban area in 5.6%, higher in 4.6 percentage points registered in the rural area (1.0%). Lima Metropolitan area and the Constitutional Province of Callao register the highest unemployment rate with 7.8%; followed by Moquegua (7.5%), Arequipa (5.5%), Lambayeque (4.8%) and Tumbes (4.0%), with important percentages of population that actively look employment. Meanwhile, the lowest unemployment rates were reported in Apurímac (1.8%) and Ucayali (2.0%).
Greater unemployment rate in cities
The unemployment rate of the 26 main cities under research was placed in 6.4%. From the cities researched, three of them register unemployment rate that is above the average value (6.4%), among them are Moquegua (8.1%), Lima Metropolitan area and Constitutional Province of Callao (7.8%) and Huancavelica (6.6%). While the lower rates are registered in four cities: Moyobamba (2.1%), Tarapoto (2.6%), Puerto Maldonado and Pucallpa (2.7%, in each case).
Average monthly income by work placed in 1 524 Soles
According to the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN) of the year 2022, in the country the average monthly income by work placed in 1 524.0 Soles. The men average income by work was 1 726.6 Soles and that of women was 1 246.9 Soles.
By departments, the average monthly income of the employed population living in Arequipa was of 1 923.9 Soles, Lima Metropolitan area- Constitutional Province of Callao with 1 885.2 Soles, Madre de Dios 1 821.0 Soles, Ica 1 801.2 Soles, Moquegua 1 780.8 Soles, registered incomes by work higher than the national average. Meanwhile, Puno 930.6 Soles, Huancavelica 950.3 Soles and Cajamarca 988.1 Soles, reported lower incomes.
The cities had greater average income by work
The average monthly income by work of the 26 cities placed in 1 833.6 Soles. In nine cities researched the income of the employed ones is higher than the average (1 833.6 Soles). These are the cities Arequipa (2 096.0 Soles), Chachapoyas (2 088.1 Soles), Moquegua (1 949.1 Soles), Ica (1 942.7 Soles), Puerto Maldonado (1 910.8 Soles), Lima Metropolitan area and Constitutional Province of Callao (1 885.2 Soles), Abancay (1 860.6 Soles), Cusco (1 843.6 Soles) y Trujillo (1 834.0 Soles).
