Employed population of Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 161 thousand 700 persons in the quarter March-April-May of 2023

In the quarter March-April-May of 2023, the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 161 thousand 700 persons, increasing by 1.0% (48 thousand 700 persons) compared to the same quarter of the year 2022. In addition, comparing with the same quarter of 2019 (pre pandemic), the employed population increased by 6.0% (294 thousand 200 persons).
This was made known by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) through thetechnical report Situation of Labor Market in Lima Metropolitan area, prepared with the result of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN).
In this quarter, the employed population with suitable employment increased by 4.2% (117 thousand 900 persons), compared to the similar quarter of 2022 while it decreased by 5.6% (-173 thousand persons) compared to the same quarter of 2019.
On the other hand, the underemployed population decreased by 3.0% (-69 thousand 100 persons) compared to the same quarter of 2022. However, compared to the same quarter of 2019, it increased by 26.7% (467 thousand 300 persons).
Female employed population rose by 1.9%
During the quarter under analysis, the female employed population grew by 1.9% (44 thousand 200 persons) and the male population grew by 0.2% (4 thousand 500 persons), when compared to the similar quarter of 2022.
In Lima Metropolitan area, of the total population with employment, 54.2% (2 million 799 thousand 600) are men and 45.8% (2 million 362 thousand 100) are women.
Employed population aged 45 years old and older increased by 7.6%
By age groups, the employed population aged 45 years old and older increased by 7.6% (131 thousand 600 persons), followed by the population aged 25 to 44 years old by 0.5% (11 thousand 800 persons); while the employed population under 25 years old decreased by 11.3% (-94 thousand 600 persons).
Employed population with non-university superior education level grew by 22.8%
The employed population with non-university superior education level increased by 22.8% (200 thousand 500 persons) compared with the same quarter of the year 2022, followed of the population that had university education level 21.2% (256 thousand 500 persons). Meanwhile, the employed population with high-school level decreased by 14.9% (-387 thousand 400 persons) and by 4.8% (-20 thousand 800 persons) the population with elementary or lower education level.
Employed population in Services sector increased by 245 thousand 200 persons
During the quarter March-April-May of 2023, the employment increased in Services sector by 9.0% (245 thousand 200 persons); while in Manufacturing sector decreased by 3.2% (-22 thousand 300 persons), in Construction by 10.1% (-43 thousand persons) and in Commerce by 11.2% (-133 thousand 700 persons).
Unemployment Rate was of 6.8%
The unemployment rate of Lima Metropolitan area placed by 6.8%, being lower in 0.4 percentage point compared to the registered in the same quarter of the year 2022. It is estimated that during the quarter under analysis, 375 thousand 300 persons are looking for a job in Lima Metropolitan area.
Average monthly income coming from work increased by 14.2%
During the quarter under study, the average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area was of 1904, 9 Soles, amount that compared with the same quarter of the year 2022, registered an increase of 14.2%, and compared to the year 2019 registered an increase of 10.5%.
By sex, the average monthly income of the female population increased by 21.8% and that of male population by 10.2%.
