Vehicular traffic at national level increased by 2.4% in March of 2023

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that in the month of March of 2023, the National Rate of Vehicular Flow that one that measures the traffic flow of light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles through the tollbooths across the country increased by 2.4%; compared with the same month of the last year, associated with the greater traffic flow of light-duty (3.3%) and heavy-duty (1.3%) vehicles.
Traffic flow of light-duty vehiclesincreased by 3.3%
During the third month of this year, the traffic flow of light-duty vehicles increased by 3.3% compared to March of 2022. This result was influenced by the restart of classes in public and private education institutions; as well as the return to on-site work. In addition to the dynamism of the Commerce, sector due to the sale of products of educational sector; and the restaurants activity driven by the production of festivals and gastronomic fairs.
The greater traffic was observed in the following toll booths: to the north, in San Martín (Moyobamba 96.4% and Aguas Claras 3.2%); in the south, Arequipa (Matarani Concesión 13.5% and Uchumayo-Concesión 4.5%) and Ica (Marcona 8.8%); and in the center, Lima (Serpentine de Pasamayo 443.7%) and Junín (Quiulla 3.4%).
Traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles increased by 1.3%
During the month of March of 2023, the flow of heavy-duty vehicles increased by 1.3% compared to the same month of the last year, due to the greater demand of these units for Commerce, Mining and Hydrocarbons sectors. Also, due to the progressive restart and standardization of mining operations that were affected during the two first months of the year due to the social conflicts that happened in different regions. Nevertheless, the presence of Cyclone Yaku made difficult the regular traffic flow due to heavy rains and huaicos in some areas of the country, which affected the development economic activities such as agricultural and construction activities, mainly.
The tollbooths that showed positive behavior of heavy-duty units were to the north, San Martín (Moyobamba 23.2% and Pongo 19.6%) and Piura (Paita 10.4%). Likewise, in the south Arequipa (Matarani Concesión 30.0% and Uchumayo-Concesión 12.4%), Ica (Marcona 15.1% and Jahuay Chincha 1.4%) and Moquegua (Ilo 8.9%); and in the center, Junín (Quiulla 6.5% and Casaracra 0.8%) and Lima (Corcona 2.7%).
Traffic flow of heavy-duty units of 3 to 7 axle increased by 1.9%
During the month under analysis, the traffic flow of heavy-duty units of 3 to 7 axle reported an increase of 1.9%, compared to March of the last year, explained by the increase of vehicle traffic flow such as trailers, semi-trailers and heavy trucks for the movement of cargo of 6 axle (7.5%) and 7 axle (5.0%). Meanwhile, the traffic flow of 3 axle (-4.7%), 4 axle (-2.3%) and 5 axle (-1.9%) vehicles decreased.
