More than 8 million 800 thousand mothers commemorates their day in Peru this Sunday

On the occasion of Mother’s Day that is commemorate this Sunday, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that as of the year 2023, in Peru there are 8 million 891 thousand mothers. From this total, 60.1% are between 15 to 49 years old, it means that they are in their childbearing years (5 million 341 thousand); 16.8% are in the 50 -59 (1 million 491 thousand) years old age group and 23.1% are 60 years old and over, which is equivalent to 2 million 54 thousand.
Mothers in childbearing years have in average two children
According to the results of the Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES) 2021, The Total Fertility Rate of women in childbearing years (15-49 years old) is of two children. According to place of residence, it is noted that in rural area reaches to 2.7 children per women; while in urban area reaches to 1.8 children per women on average.
According to education level, mothers with higher education in childbearing years have on average 1.6 children; meanwhile, meanwhile those with elementary education have 3.1 children.
Most of women have their first child by the age of 22 years old
In this country, the median age of the mothers at the birth of their first child is 22.2 years old. According to ethnic perception of women that are self-identify as racially mixed women, they had their first child at the age of 23.1 years old, those women with self-perception as Afro-descendants at the age of 22.6 years old. While those women that speaks as native language in Quechua or Aimara/or Peruvian amazon language or other native language at the age of 20.7 years old.
44 out of 100 mothers have high-school education level
44.0% of the mothers have high-school education level, 30.3% have some level or year of elementary or lower education level, 15.1% have non-university superior education level and 10.6% had university superior education level including postgraduate degree.
68.3% of mothers are economically active
From the total of mothers, 68.3% is part of the Economically Active Population (PEA), from this proportion the 96.0% participates in the labor market in condition of employed and 4.0% is looking for a job. While, 31.7% of mothers are part of the Non-Economically Active Population (No PEA).
47.7% of mothers that work in some economic activity are independent
By category of occupation, it is seen that 47.7% of mothers that work in some economic activity work as independent workers, 39.6% are salaried and 12.5% work as unpaid family member.
69 out of 100 mothers work in Service or Commerce economic activities
As of the year 2022, 68.7% of the mothers are working in economic activities such as Services (40.7%) and Commerce (28.0%) 22.5% in Agriculture, Fishing, Mining, 8.3% in Manufacture and 0.4% in Construction.
80.2% of mothers that work in some economic activity do it in micro or small businesses
According to the size of companies in which they perform the economic activity, 80.2% of women aged 15 years old and over they work in companies of 1 to 10 employees, of women aged 15 years old and over they work in companies of 1 to 10 employees, 15.5% in big companies (51 and more workers) and 4.1% in medium companies (11 to 50 employees).
