Flow of vehicular traffic at national level increased 2.9% in February of 2023

During the month of February of this year, the National Rate of Vehicular Flow the one that measures the traffic flow of light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles through the toll booths across the country decreased by 2.9%, compared tom the same month of the last year. This information was released by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), through the technical report Flow of Vehicular Traffic through Toll Booths. This performance was driven by the greater traffic flow of light duty vehicles (5.9%), dimmed by the decrease of traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles (-1.1%).
During the period March 2022 – February 2023, the National Rate of Vehicular Flow showed a positive variation of 4.8%.
Traffic flow of light-duty vehicles increased by 5.9%
During February of this year, the traffic flow rate of light-duty vehicles was higher by 5.9%, compared to the same month of the year 2022, due to the greater movement of people and vehicles favored by summer season, celebration of Valentine’s Day, associated to the large attendance to shopping centers and visits to entertainment venues.
Tool booths that registered this behavior were: to the north, it increased in Lambayeque (Diversion Olmos 88.8%), San Martin (Moyobamba 38.1%), La Libertad (Chicama 1.9%) and Piura (Paita 1.7%); in the south, it increased in Arequipa (Matarani-Concesion 10.6%) and Moquegua (Ilo 0.6%); and in the center it increased in Lima (Serpentine of Pasamayo 11.4%).
Traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles decreased by 1.1%
In February of 2023, the traffic flow rate of heavy-duty vehicles decreased by 1.1%, compared to the same month of the last year. This was explained by the lower demand of the agricultural, manufacturing and construction service before the continuity of social conflicts that caused the highway blockades, stoppage of works and closure of markets, carried out in different regions of the country.
The lower traffic flow was reported in the following toll booths: to the north, in Piura (Loma Larga Baja -30.6%, Chulucanas -13.8%, Piura-Sullana -3.4%), Cajamarca (Pomahuaca - Pucara -15.9%), San Martin (Aguas Claras -11.6%, Moyobamba -3.5%), La Libertad (Chicama -4.2%, Pacanguilla -1.5%, Viru -1.3%) and Ancash (Huarmey -3.9%). In the south, it decreased in Ica (Marcona -87.3%), Moquegua (Pampa Cuellar -74.8%), and in Arequipa (Patahuasi -25.3%, Uchumayo-Concesion -3.8%). In the center, it contracted in Junin (Casaracra -14.2%, Quiulla -5.7%) and Lima (Corcona -9.7%, Fortaleza -4.8%, Serpentine of Pasamayo -3.5%, El Paraiso -3.4%).
Traffic flow rate of heavy-duty vehicles of 3 to 7 axle decreased by 1.3%
The INEI informed that the traffic flow rate of heavy-duty vehicles of 3 to 7 axle, during the second month of 2023, decreased by 1.3%, compared with February of the last year. This happens due to the reduction of traffic flow of vehicles such as trailers, semitrailers and heavy-duty trucks of 3 axle (-3.8%), 4 axle (-2.2%) and 5 axle (-12.4%); nevertheless, it increased the traffic flow of vehicles of 6 axle (2.3%) and 7 axle (16.4%).
