Population with employment in Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 124 thousand persons in the first quarter of 2023

During the quarter January-February-March of 2023, the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 124 thousand 400 persons, increasing in 4.1% (203 thousand 300 persons) compared to the same quarter of the year 2022. This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) through the technical report Situation of Labor Market in Lima Metropolitan area, prepared with the result of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN).
Population with suitable job increased by 10.6%
The employed population with suitable job reached 3 million 5 thousand 200 persons in Lima Metropolitan area and compared with the same quarter of the year 2022, increased by 10.6% (288 thousand 900 persons). Nevertheless, compared to the first quarter of 2019, decreased by 1.7% (- 51 thousand 700 persons).
The underemployed population decreased by 3.9% (-85 thousand 600 persons) compared to the same quarter of the last year; but compared with the same quarter of 2019, increased by 19.5% (346 thousand 500 persons).
In 8.6% grew the female employed population
In the quarter January-February-March of this year, the female employed population increased by 8.6% (187 thousand persons) and the male one increased by 0.6% (16 thousand 200 persons), compared with the same quarter of the year 2022.
Employment in the population aged 45 years old and over increased by 8.8%
According to age groups, the employed population aged 45 years old and over grew by 8.8% (144 thousand 800 persons), followed by the population aged 25 to 44 years old in 4.1% (99 thousand persons); while the employed population under 25 years old decreased by 4.8% (-40 thousand 500 persons).
Employed population with university education increased by 31.9%
According to education level, the employed population with higher university education increased by 31.9% (353 thousand 300 persons) and the population with higher non-university education increased by 12.8% (118 thousand 200 persons). Meanwhile, population with elementary or lower level of education decreased by 11.1% (-45 thousand 500 persons) and the population with high school population decreased by 9.0% (-222 thousand 700 persons).
In 8.0% increased the employed population in the Services activity
During the quarter under study, the employed population in Service activity increased by 8.0% (213 thousand 400 persons) compared with the same quarter of the year 2022, and in Manufacturing by 4.6% (29 thousand 700 persons); nevertheless, Commerce decreased by 3.0% (-34 thousand persons) and in Construction by 1.5% (-6 thousand 500 persons).
Employment increased in companies of 11 to 50 workers by 31.2%
The employed population increased by 31.2% (135 thousand 700 persons) in the economic units of 11 to 50 workers, and in 7.1% (92 thousand 300 persons) in the companies of 51 and more workers; nevertheless, it decreased by 0.8% (-24 thousand 700 persons) in establishments of 1 to 10 workers.
Unemployment rate was of 7.5%
During the first quarter of the current year, the unemployment rate of Lima Metropolitan area placed in 7.5%, it is estimated that 414 thousand 500 persons were looking for job during the mentioned period under study.
Wage mass coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area increased by 19.5%
During the quarter January-February-March of 2023, the wage mass coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area reported a positive variation of 19.5%, compared to the same quarter of the year 2022.
In 11.8% increased the average monthly income coming from work in Lima Metropolitan area
During the first quarter of 2023, the average monthly income coming from work from the main activity in Lima Metropolitan area placed in 1 840.9 Soles and increased in 11.8% (194.3 Soles) compared with the same quarter of 2022. In addition, showed positive behavior compared to the same quarter of the year 2021 in 18.6% (288.9 Soles), of the year 2020 by 7.6% (130.4 Soles) and of the year 2019 by 7.2% (124.4 Soles).
According to sex, the average monthly income of the male population increased by 9.6% (180.9 Soles) and in the case of women by 17.7% (235.9 Soles).
Average monthly income grew by 11.3% in the population with higher non-university education
The average monthly income increased by 11.3% (175.9 Soles) among those with higher non-university education in 8.5% (107.7 Soles) among those that have high school education in 2.5% (68.7 Soles) among those with university education; while it decreased in 2.7% (-28.2 Soles) in the population with elementary or lower education level.
In most of the activities increased the average monthly income in Lima Metropolitan area
The employed population that made activities in the Commerce sector grew in 20.6% (264.9 Soles), followed by Manufacturing in 18.8% (275.1 Soles) and Services in 9.9% (174.5 Soles) while it decreased in Construction in 1.3% (-25.4 Soles).
