Commercial activity grew 1.24% in January of 2023

In January of the current year, the Commerce sector increased in 1.24% compared to the same month of the year 2022, determined by the positive evolution of wholesale and retail commerce, while it decreased automotive commerce; this behavior occurs in a context of continuity of economic activities but affected by social movements in some regions of the country. This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).
 
In 1.35% increased the wholesale commerce
During the month under analysis, the wholesale commerce increased by 1.35% due to the sale of other type of machinery and equipment (medical material, firefighting equipment and textile machinery), due to the distribution for different economic sectors. It also grew the sale of liquid and gas fuels and allied products, mainly to mining, fishing and construction sectors, retail stores and domestic gas distributors; sale of other household goods due to the demand of office supplies and school equipment due to “school campaign”; as well as pharmaceutical products and personal care products.
 
Same trend showed the sale of telecommunication equipment and its parts due to the demand driven by business strategies and by renewal and the sale of metals and ore minerals due to the increase of the local demand and competitive prices in international markets; as well as the sale of computers, peripheral equipment and informatics programs. 
 
Nevertheless, it decreased the sale of construction materials, hardware retailing, waste and scrap and other products.
 
Retail commerce increased by 2.02%
During the month under study, retail commerce increased by 2.02% explained by the sale of fuel for automotive vehicles before the greater demand in stations; the sale of clothing items, footwear and leather articles due to the opening of new sales outlet and summer campaign; sale of books, newspapers and stationary items cause the demand of school equipment and office material. 
 
In addition, it outstood the sale of hardware retailing, paints and glass products; of new products in specialized warehouses due to greater demand of optical, topographical, electric and security articles; the sale of textile products due to the acquisition of articles for shirts and embroidery; as well as sport articles in accordance with the beginning of useful holidays. 
 
On the other hand, it decreased the sale of pharmaceutical and medicine products, cosmetics and toiletries and household appliances, furniture and lighting equipment in specialized warehouses. 
 
In 2.16% decreased the automotive commerce
The INEI informed that, during the first month of this year, the automotive commerce decreased by 2.16% associated with the lower sale of parts, pieces and accessories of automotive accessories, as well as the sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and its parts, pieces and accessories. 
 
Nevertheless, the marketing of light duty and heavy-duty vehicles and the maintenance and repair of automotive vehicles.
