Vehicle traffic at national level decreased by 3.4% in January of this year

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the month of January of 2023, the National Rate of Vehicular Flow that one that measures the traffic flow of light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles through the toll booths across the country decreased by 3.4% compared to the same month of the last year. This situation was influenced by the lower traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles (-8.9%) as a consequence of blocking of highways which caused the impediment of the regular transit of goods, due to demonstrations and social conflicts in various departments of the country, that affected the demand of transportation service. Nevertheless, the monthly outcome was attenuated by the slightly increase in the traffic flow of light vehicles (0.9%).
Traffic flow of heavy-duty vehicles drop 8.9%
During the first month of 2023, the traffic flow of heavy-duty units in toll booths nationwide decreased by 8.9%, due to the reduction of the demand of these vehicles for the Construction and Mining and Hydrocarbons sectors, which activities were negative due to the stoppage in the highways, due to the protests that happened in different places of the country. Likewise, in lesser extent, the demand of service in Agricultural, Manufacturing and Commerce sectors decreased.
The toll booths that reported lower traffic flow were: to the south, Puno (Santa Lucia -86.0%), Moquegua (Pampa Cuellar -79.6% and Ilo -19.4%), Arequipa (Patahuasi -63.3% and Uchumayo-Concesion -36.5%) and Ica (Jahuay Chincha -24.5%); and in the center, Junin (Casaracra – 11.7% and Quiulla -7.7%) and Lima (Corcona -11.0%, Variant of Pasamayo -8.9%, Fortaleza -8.2%, El Paraiso -5.1% and Serpentine of Pasamayo -3.4%).
In the north, Piura (Loma Larga Baja -29.5% and Piura-Sullana -1.0%), San Martin (Moyobamba -18.1% and Aguas Claras -13.8%), Cajamarca (Pomahuaca - Pucara -18.1%), La Libertad (Viru -10.3%, Pacanguilla -4.9% and Chicama -1.5%), Ancash (Huarmey -8.0%) and Lambayeque (Diversion Olmos -7.9%).
Traffic flow of heavy-duty units of 3 to 7 axle reduced by 9.8%
During January of this year, the traffic of heavy-duty units of 3 to 7 axle reported a decrease of 9.8%, compared with the same month of 2022. This result was explained by the lower displacement of vehicles, such as trailers, semitrailers and heavy-duty cargo trucks of 3 axle (-12.2%), 4 axle (-11.0%), 5 axle (-14.5%) and 6 axle (-7,6%); nevertheless, the traffic flow of 7 axle vehicles increased (12.0%).
Traffic flow of light-duty vehicle increased by 0.9%
During January of 2023, traffic flow of light-duty vehicle registered by the toll booths of the country registered a slight increase of 0.9% compared to the same month of the last year, driven by the face-to-face return to the work place, the normality of the development of entertainment activities. It also influenced the summer season with greater displacement of persons towards the main beaches of the country.
The toll booths that registered greater movements were to the north, Piura (Loma Larga Baja 5.4%); and in the center, in Lima (Serpentine of Pasamayo 5.3%). Nevertheless, it decreased in the south, in Puno (Santa Lucia -82.7%), Arequipa (Patahuasi -63.3%, Uchumayo-Concesion -36.1% and Matarani -11.3%), Moquegua (Pampa Cuellar -52.5% and Ilo -19.3%) and Ica (Jahuay Chincha -26.3%).
