At national level the employed population reached 17 million 696 thousand people in the 4th quarter of 2022

During the fourth quarter of the year 2022, the employed population of the country reached 17 million 696 thousand 400 people, increasing by 0.7% (116 thousand 100 people) compared to the same quarter of the year 2021. When compared to the similar quarters of the years 2020 and 2019, increases of 7.8% and 1.8%, respectively, were observed, as reported by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) through the technical report Peru: Behavior of Labor Market Indicators of the at National Level, prepared with the results of the National Household Survey (ENAHO).

Likewise, in urban area, the employed population increased by 1.9% (254 thousand 400 people); nevertheless, in the rural area decreased by 3.5% (-138 thousand 300 people). Compared to the similar quarter of 2019, in the urban area increased by 3.1% (418 thousand 500 people), while in the rural area decreased by 2.5% (-98 thousand 300 people).

By natural region, employed population increased on the Coast by 1.2% (110 thousand people) compared to the same quarter of the year 2021, due to the growth in the North Coast by 2.9% (66 thousand 300 people) and on the Central Coast by 0.8% (51 thousand 800 people), while it decreased in the South Coast by 1.5% (-7 thousand 900 people).

In the Highlands, employment decreased by 0.5% (27 thousand 500 people), mainly in North Highlands by 12.2% (-114 thousand 500 people); nevertheless, it increased in Center Highland and South Highland by 2.5% (51 thousand 200 people) and 1.3% (35 thousand 900 people), respectively. In the Jungle it grew by 1.5% (33 thousand 600 people).

According to age groups, employed population of 45 years old and older increased by 4.8% (305 thousand 500 people) and that of 25 to 44 years old by 2.2% (182 thousand 700 people); while in the group of 14 to 24 years old it decreased by 12.8% (-371 thousand 900 people).

In the fourth quarter of the last year, the employed population with university education decreased by 3.1% (-105 thousand 400 people), followed by those with elementary o lower education level by 1.7% (-66 thousand 800 people) and those with non-university higher education level by 1.5% (-41 thousand 400 people); on the other hand employed population with high-school education level increased by 4.3% (320 thousand 600 people).

During the last quarter of the year 2022, the employment in Mining activity increased in 11.9% (25 thousand 100 people); followed by Services 3.6% (248 thousand people) and Commerce 2.0% (64 thousand 600 people); nevertheless, it decreased in Manufacturing 1.1% (-16 thousand 400 people), Construction 1.5% (-18 thousand 800 people), Agriculture 4.2% (-181 thousand 400 people) and Fishing in 6.3% (-5 thousand 200 people).

From October to December of 2022, the employed population was reduced in companies of 51 and more workers by 2.3% (-77 thousand 300 people) and in companies of 11 to 50 workers in 2.1% (-27 thousand 700 people); nevertheless, it grew in companies of 1 to 10 workers in 1.7% (212 thousand 400 people).

During the quarter under study, the unemployment rate of the country placed in 3.6%. During the last quarter of the last year, 667 thousand 100 people actively sought employment.

During the year 2022, employed population of the country reached 17 million 756 thousand 400 people, increasing in 3.7% (636 thousand 300 people) compared with the year 2021. Compared to the years 2020 and 2019, it showed increases of 19.2% (2 million 854 thousand 600 people) and 3.6% (623 thousand 300 people), respectively.

Likewise, in the urban area it grew by 6.0% (798 thousand 400 people); however, in the rural area it was reduced by 4.2% (-162 thousand 100 people), compared with the year 2021.

The INEI informed that male employment increased by 3.5% (334 thousand 100 people) and female employment by 4.1% (302 thousand 100 people), compared to the year 2021.

According to age groups, the employed population aged 45 years old and older grew by 7.3% (441 thousand 300 people), followed by the group aged 25 to 44 years old by 3.6% (292 thousand 900 people); while it decreased in the group aged 14 to 24 years old by 3.3% (-97 thousand 900 people).

During the year 2022, compared to the year 2021, the employed population with university population increased by 8.7% (232 thousand 700 people), followed by the non-university higher education by 7.8% (204 thousand 100 people) and those that studied high-school education by 3.2% (250 thousand 800 people); however, it was reduced among the employed population with elementary or lower education level by 1.4% (-56 thousand 500 people).

During the year 2022, the employed population increased in Mining by 16.7% (31 thousand 300 people) when compared to the year 2021, followed by Services by 12.0% (725 thousand 500 people), Manufacturing 8.7% (130 thousand 800 people), Construction by 4.7% (58 thousand 600 people) and Commerce by 3.4% (112 thousand 100 people); however, it decreased in Agriculture by 8.8% (-412 thousand 300 people) and in Fishing by 9.6% (-9 thousand 600 people).

During the year 2022, the employment increased in the companies from 11 to 50 workers by 11.2% (125 thousand 800 people), followed by companies from 51 and more workers by 7.7% (228 thousand 600 people) and companies from 1 to 10 workers by 2.1% (272 thousand 900 people).

When comparing the year 2022 with 2021, the population with the adequate employment throughout the country reached 9 million 275 thousand 100 people, increasing by 8.8% (749 thousand 600 people) and by 36.7% (2 million 491 thousand 500 people) compared to the year 2020; however, it decreased by 3.0% (-283 thousand 540 people) compared to the year 2019. On the other hand, the underemployed population decreased by 1.3% (113 thousand 400 people); while compared to the years 2020 and 2019, it increased by 4.5% (363 thousand 100 people) and by 12.0% (906 thousand 700 people) respectively.

In the year 2022, the country’s unemployment rate was of 4.3%. In the year 2022, 794 thousand 600 people actively sought employment.

In the year 2022, the average monthly income per job in the urban area was 1,589.1 Soles, compared to the year 2021, it meant an increase of 10.0% (144 Soles); compared to the year 2019, the average monthly income per job decreased by 0.4% (-6.3 Soles).
