Employed population of Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 102 thousand persons from December 2022 to February 2023

In the quarter December 2022 – January-February 2023, the employed population in Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 102 thousand 600 persons, increasing in 4.6% (224 thousand 400 persons), compared with the same quarter of the last year; this was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) through the technical report Labor Market Situation in Lima Metropolitan area. Also, informed that comparing this figure with the quarter December 2019-January-February 2020, increased in 2.1% (105 thousand persons).
The population with adequate employment in Lima Metropolitan area totalized 3 million 48 thousand 400 persons and grew in 13.7% (368 thousand persons), compared to the same quarter of the last year. Meanwhile, while compared to the quarter December 2019–January-February 2020, it decreased in 3.9% (-122 thousand persons).
On the other hand, the underemployed population decreased in 6.5% (-143 thousand 700 persons) compared to the same period of the last year; nevertheless, compared to the quarter December 2019 –January-February 2020, increased 12.4% (226 thousand 900 persons).
Male employed population increased in 0.5% and female in 9.8%
During the quarter under analysis, compared with the same quarter of the last year, the male employed population grew in 0.5% (12 thousand 100 persons) and the female in employed population grew in 9.8% (212 thousand 300 persons). Comparing to the same quarter three years ago, the female employed population increased in 5.1% (114 thousand 700 persons), on the hand, the male employed population decreased 0.4% (-9 thousand 700 persons).
Employed population aged 45 years old and over grew by 10.8%
Employed population increased in greater proportion in the group aged 45 years old and over, by increasing by 10.8% (175 thousand 300 persons), followed by the population aged 25 to 44 years old, in 4.8% (115 thousand persons); while the population age 14 to 24 years decreased by 7.9% (-65 thousand 900 persons).
Employment increased 34.6% among the population with university education
The INEI informed that the employed population with university education increased by 34.6% (378 thousand 200 persons), followed by those that studied non-college higher education by 18.8% (168 thousand 400 persons). Nevertheless, it decreased by 10.8% (- 269 thousand 300 persons) among those that have high-school education and by 13.4% (-52 thousand 900 persons) among those that have elementary or lower education.
Employed population increased by 10.8% in the Services sector
The employed population increased by 10.8% in the Services sector (283 thousand personas); meanwhile it decreased the Construction sector by 2.6% (-10 thousand 700 personas), in Commerce sector by 1.5% (-16 thousand 700 personas) and Manufacturing sector by 1.2% (-7 thousand 800 persons).
Lima Metropolitan area unemployment rate was 7.3%
During the quarter under study, Lima Metropolitan area unemployment rate placed by 7.3%, a lower figure in 1.6 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the last year. It is estimated that 403 thousand 600 persons actively sought employment in Lima Metropolitan area.
Average monthly income from work in Lima Metropolitan area increased by 11.1%
The INEI informed that the average monthly income from work in Lima Metropolitan area was of 1,833.20 Soles, a higher amount by 11.1% to the registered in the same quarter of the last year. Likewise, compared with the same quarter of two and three years ago there were registered increases of 19.2% and 2.4%, respectively.
According to sex, the average monthly income of the male population was of 2,087.3 Soles, increasing by 11.5%, and that of women was of 1,535.0 Soles, higher in 12.7% compared to the quarter of the last year.
Average monthly income grew in all the activity branches
From December of 2022 to February 2023, increased the average monthly income of the workers of the Commerce (18.9%), Services (10.0%), Manufacturing (9.4%) and Construction (5.8%) sector.
