On 8 March around 17 million of women commemorate their day in Peru

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that in the year 2023, the female population of our country amount 16 million 999 thousand and represent the 50.4% of the total population of the country. On 8 March the International Women’s Day, date we honor them and their constant struggle for equality and the full exercise of their rights every day.
According to the age, of total women, the 23.5% are under 15 years old (3 million 999 thousand), 52.0% are between 15 to 49 years old, it means those of child-bearing age (8 million 832 thousand), 10.3% are between 50 to 59 years old (1 million 756 thousand) and the 14.2% are older than 60 years old (2 million 412 thousand).
35.9% of the households are female- headed households
According to the results of the National Household Survey (ENAHO), 35.9% of the households of the country are female- headed households. By household typology, it was observed that the 54.1% of the female- headed households are nuclear, it means composed by mother, father and children. Meanwhile, the 19.9% of the female- headed households are single-owner and the 18.6% are extended, among others.
70 out of 100 women are 6 years old and over use the Internet
The Internet access is fundamental for the educational and labor performance of people; as well as for its daily performance in their daily tasks, for that reason a greater proportion of the population use the Internet. By age groups, it is observed that 90.4% of young women aged 19 to 24 years old use this technology; in those aged 12 to 18 years old represents the 89.4%; in those aged 25 to 40 years old the proportion is of 81.6%; in those aged 6 to 11 years old is 72.7%; in those aged 41 to 59 years old is 59.9% and among women over 60 years old that use the Internet this percentage represents the 25.1%.
84 out of 100 women have health insurance
As of 2021, 81.3% of the population have health insurance. According to sex, women that have this health coverage represented 83.9% at national level.
According to the type of health insurance, 59.3% is affiliated to the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS), 21.5% Social Health Insurance (ESSALUD) and 3.1% have other type of health insurance.
78 out of 100 women of childbearing age use contraceptive methods
According to the Demographic and Family Health Survey 2021 (ENDES), at national level 78.1% of women of childbearing age, it means, those that are 15 to 49 years old, use contraceptive methods. According to the place of residence, the proportion of women that uses family planning methods is the same in the urban (78.0%) and rural (78.3%) area.
98.3% of women receive prenatal care by health care provider
The ENDES revealed that 98.3% of women that are mothers received prenatal care by a health professional (doctor, obstetrician and nurse) during pregnancy. According to the place of residence, in the urban area, women that received prenatal care by health professionals represented 99.3% and in the rural area, this proportion reached 95.0%.
Regarding the delivery care, those that were treated in a health establishments reached 93.3% and the births attended by health professionals (doctor, obstetrician and nurse) represented the 94.9%.
Women aged 15 years old and older have in average 10 years of studies
The ENAHO showed that, women aged 15 years old and older have an average of ten years of study, the same figure to the average of years of study of men (10.4).
38.0% of women work in some economic activity do it in services
According to the economic activity in which women work in 38.0% do it on services, 25.9% agriculture, fishing and mining 27.5% commerce, 8.1% manufacturing and 0.6% in construction.
42 out of 100 women that work in some economic activity are independent
According to the ENAHO information, 41.8% of women work in some economic activity do it in an independent way and 41.4% are dependent workers. It is worth to mention that 16.8% of women that work in some economic activity have the condition of unpaid family worker.
17 out of 100 women that work in some economic activity have a second job
When we talk about the tenure of a secondary activity of busy women in some economic activity, it is observed that the 16.8% has other job.
49.5% of women are 18 years old and over have access to the financial system
The ENAHO results showed that the 49.5% of women are 18 years old and older have access to the financial system; while the 50.5% does not have some credit or debit card and /or a saving account in some financial entity.
